Yep, they can be. Lots safer once they started running wire cable through the spring so when they do break they can't lash out and hurt someone.

At 59°F?? I don't heat the coop EVER and it sometimes gets down to -20°F.

this is the 1st I have used lamps in a coop but you may be right will save them for the brooders at blow 70 I get chilly, blood is a thick as it used to be

My neighbor runs one all winter.
I sure ain't going to my naked necks run around outside below zero temps no probs.

Yeah but your chickens already have their down coats on so they don't need extra heat

I get you on the "blood not as thick as it used to be". I'm still OK but DW's dad, at 96 and with Parkinson's needs a coat and gloves when outside even in the sun and 70°F. He used to drive the few miles to the ski slope and take at least one run every day the mountain was open no matter what the weather threw out. Age catches up with us.

Back when my Dr. suggested it, he said it's a safe one. That taking a lot wouldn't hurt me, just maybe cause diarrhea.

When I was REALLY sick and couldn't figure out anymore what did order didn't make me sick, and I was on 8 prescriptions, I I read ALL ingredients in everything that went into my stomach. And you would be surprised what all is in the medications you take. That includes chemical processes used to make them. Remember, white pills doesn't mean they are so much safer cause no color is added. It can also mean a bleaching process to make them white. They add stuff to make it shelf stable, add stuff so pills doesn't stick together... In metamucil they add silica- do you know what that is? When I got sick on sulfasalazine I was told to stay away from sulfa. And I discovered most dried fruits have sulfa in then AND under government regulations it doesn't have to be on the label as long as they only use a certain amount. So if you eat raisins with sulfa that isn't on the label, and you binge eat them for constipation(just saying) you may be getting more sulfa then the government regulations...just a thought!
If you have problems with milk, did you know there's quite a few pills with milk in them? My DRs said miralax is safe too but it reminded me of chemicals. I did find it interesting what information you can pull up on medications

adventured out to RK this morning, 59 degrees Thermals on warm wooley socks, heat lamps for the coops, coffee pods for the neighbors, standing water from the rain, I'm happy to be back home

Got up early this morning and left the chickens out, the ground was all white with frost and the chickens frisked about and got busy eating Frozen grass. But then it's their own fault if they get cold. But when they are in there Pen and can't seek out a sunny spot, I like to make sure they aren't cold either. I just wish they would hurry up and finish growing their winter coats. They were heavily feathered all summer, now that it goes down in the 20's they are half naked. Guess nature knows better what its doing then I! They are happier then the neighbors dogs who are crying to get back into the house!

@microchick how's the diet going? Can you eat potatoes? Some of the stores and markets around here have small red potatoes, they are always in the store packaging so I assume they get them in bulk. They are different from any red potatoes I ever had. Real creamy and the texture smooth like jello. They are so good, I can boil them in their skin, peel as I eat them like a popsicle. It's hard to find food that works while working at the mall. They are good without salt, pepper or butter.

Kinda funny was given a double name, born in VA .. Was called Jo most my life. Niece grew up boyfriend is Joe all of sudden had everyone saying I am Penny .. What the he double toothpicks
