The Old Folks Home

OK, so given the odds, do you want it? Or perhaps better yet, risk your child? 52% is good?

If Small Pox was still a disease, yes I would allow my children to have that one. The statistic was that 52% died that were not vaccinated and caught Small Pox. Less than 1% died if they were vaccinated and caught Small Pox.

Not the flu vaccine though. Whooping cough yes and etc. each is an individual assessment.

We did not give our children any vaccine until they were three years old.

Ron, did I understand you. YOu children were not vaccinated until 3 years old? You should have heard the rant I received from my pediatrician when I questioned the number of vaccinations babies, my babies, were getting. SHe went off on me. In horses my vet had increased the age of the first vaccination because they had found vaccintions were working against the antibodies acquired from the colostrum. I was trying to ask if the number could be decreased by combining 2 shots ito one as well. That's when she went off on me. Sigh. I was asking intelligent questions and she did not like that I was asking. I finally left that office.

We started my son on the usual set of vaccinations at the usual times, and the results scared me. He swelled an area as big as I could spread with my hand at the injection sites, ran a moderately high fever, and was not just fussy but mean (hard to say exactly how a baby can be "mean", but he was) every time he got a shot. I got concerned enough, we put the rest of the shots off until just before he started school. I didn't even start my daughter's shots until she was nearly school age because of what had happened with her brother, though her immune system behaves better than his, she probably would have been fine. Some pediatricians recognize that just because it's the usual way doesn't mean it's the only way to do things.

We were lucky. When we told our pediatrician that we were waiting he just said we should be fine because of Herd immunity.

Gotta love California...

They give them so many shots as infants because they pretty much do not work. Also, that many shots can actually mess up their immune systems. Waiting allowed us to fully protect with a lot less shots spread out over a couple of years. They were caught up on shots by Kindergarten. They are very healthy too.

I am not saying this is best for everyone. It worked for us.

My son had a very unusual reaction to his MMR vaccine. He developed German Measles. Less than .005% of kids have that reaction. Needless to say, he never had another one, and I fought that his entire school life. Then in 9th grade, my mom took him to the doc thinking I was just a bad mother, and completely forgetting about his reaction, and had him immunized again. Guess what??? Roseolla!!!! A form of German Measles!!!

Geez, I bet your mom felt bad after that.

I read, read, read and try to get educated. So much can change with studies being done all the time. I try to use good judgement. ANd I finally found a good pediatrition from a teaching hospital.

My oldest son is difficult to re-direct. ONe time when he was about 4-5, he was watching TV close up as he usually did. I had read that this doesn't effect their vision at all as we were all told as children. Well, my MIL told him to back away from the TV. I told her it was ok and he could watch from there. SHe told him again. I went off on her. HE is MY child, I rule. She got in a huff and drove home. Of course I felt bad. Since then I have learned how manipulative she is, sigh, and I don't invite her over any more. I don't do drama. ANd I won't alter what I think and do to pander to her to keep peace. I don't listen much to her anymore . .. she has not kept up with child rearing information. Still thinks diapers need to go in a pail of bleach water. Really that is what she advised me. lol

Storm winds have been picking up, with gusts now and then. Rain is just a light drizzle. All the birds are in except three excapees during morning feeding. THe worst is to start at 3pm. THat is my deadline for feeding today so everyone has what they need during the storm.

Animals and kids and husband--lots of energy spent worrying about them. I think I need to cut back. ( LOL and I don't mean on the kids and DH! LOL)
