The Old Folks Home

Sorry to hear about yet another tunnel minded doctor. The job is to educate, and provide information, as well as opinions. Ultimately you are to make the decision. I can't remember the exact numbers, nor do I feel like researching it again, but the actual deaths were about 1 in 500 for the smallpox vaccine. Yes...it did erradicate the disease, but at a cost. Side effects and disabilities like paralysis and nervous system and muscular system disorders were not included in that. I would hope vaccinations are better these days, and for the most part, many are safe and actually prevent the disease they are intended for! Imagine that! However, I have to respect a parents decision not to immunize with the rest of the herd...particularly those children not running with the herd at a particular time. Its no skin off a Dr to explain in a nutshell how vaccinations work and what effects it can have, both good and bad, and yeah, lifesaving as well. With the internet available its alot easier to research things without spending all day in a medical library. After seeing first hand the results I do respect a mothers concern for her child...because ultimately its her responsibility (and the father too)

Storm winds have been picking up, with gusts now and then. Rain is just a light drizzle. All the birds are in except three excapees during morning feeding. THe worst is to start at 3pm. THat is my deadline for feeding today so everyone has what they need during the storm.

Animals and kids and husband--lots of energy spent worrying about them. I think I need to cut back. ( LOL and I don't mean on the kids and DH! LOL)

Stay safe there!

I'm underwhelmed at Sandy, so far. Gently raining since this morning, mildly windy. I'm sure all heck is going to break loose soon, though.

All you can do regarding health stuff is try to keep abreast of the latest info and make the best choice you can. Often times research is retracted or changed based upon new information. I remember in 2006 telling my pharmacy customers that the switch from Wellbutrin XL to Budeprion XL wouldn't cause a problem, and to keep sticking with it. Turns out about a month ago the FDA pulled the XL 300 mg (only of Budeprion brand) tablet strength because it was indeed NOT therapeutically equivalent to the Wellbutrin XL and in fact had never been tested for equivalence (only the lower strength had been and they extrapolated for the 300 mg) AND the company was required to do additional testing and HAD NOT. I feel utterly awful that I gently tried to coax these patients to stay on the Budeprion. Shame on the FDA.

I can hear little Piggy out there screeching to be put up on her roost. Until later...

Spent all day at the fairgrounds. It was windier today than it was yesterday - winds in the low 30's. I listened to the wind screaming through the Ferris Wheel and humming on the guy wires of the tent. It was making the sides of the tent pop and clang against the livestock panels that make up the stalls, and it sometimes made the tent poles dance. Outside, with the temps in the mid 50's, it was a bit cool. It was warmer but noisier in the tent. Spent the whole day shifting soggy shavings, trying to get the place ready for the public tonight. I feel like I've been lightly steamrollered!

God Bless those that have been affected by the storm Sandy! I just finished reading that 21 states have been seriously affected! The power outages! Our prayers are going out to all of those that have trouble, big, or small. Our country will be kicking in from all around and through out to the west in helping those in need. I am sure of it.

I hope everyone further south of me is ok. Arielle?

The pictures from NJ and NYC are just insane. We have thankfully little damage here in Maine. Yes, many have lost power, and there's downed trees and some minor flooding, but nothing like what down south had. As you know, I work in a hospital. Our order check system is in Brooklyn, which of course went down last evening. It was taking forever to write orders and to finish / verify orders because the order check system would attempt to check orders and then we'd have to wait for it to time out and error to override it. Then our phone system crashed and we were unable to make anything except local calls. Anything we shipped out UPS on Monday didn't make it to the destination today. Totally minor issues compared to the destruction elsewhere.

Arielle probably has no electricity yet. I hope she and the others hit by this storm are ok and that we did not lose too many animals.

The commercial electricity went out at 2 am this morning. There's three feet of snow on the roof and much larger drifts across the yard. Most of the chickens stsyed in the coop, some stags came out and under the coop or sat in snowdrifts...one tried walking on the snow, the he remembered to fly.. only one pullet was sitting by herself in the middle of the yard...she seemed OK, but I perched her on the poarch on a rocking chair out of the wind...she's OK, just never saw this white stuff before...her buddy came over and they roosted there tonight. Mostly all are sleeping through this. It could be two weeks before power comes on...it is just an inconvenience for us, but for some it will be a hardship. The roads are impassable. My friend a little north says they have no snow accumulation. Geez.

Yes, Arielle is one that I have been worried about! Power outage is a huge concern out there. When she can get back on, she can see that we have been thinking of her.
