The Old Folks Home

We have power! :wee It was restored yesterday evening. Dh was keeping track of the power situation. Yesterday, I asked him how many homes had been restored to power in our area, after the outage. None, zero, nada. It said the electric company was waiting for parts for their equipment. Not too far from us, there is a power plant, sub station, whatever you call it. It supplies most, if not all of the power for this area. I told Dh that I was willing to bet that when the parts came in, and they got cranked up, that almost everyone in the area would be restored all at once.

Dd and I were loading up the first group of chickens to return to their coop. Dh got a notice on his phone that 6,000 homes had power restored. Another notice, another big section was restored. I told him that we might just have power by the time we got all the chickens put back in their coops. It didn't take that long. A few minutes later, when we got back from taking the first group, and were ready to load the second group, the power came on. Within 30 minutes, 60,000 homes were restored to power. Not long after that, the entire area was back up, and running, with a very few exceptions.

While they were waiting for the parts, the linemen were busy inspecting each of the lines, transformers, etc., clearing off fallen trees, repairing/replacing lines, repairing/replacing transformers, etc. as needed. By the time they were ready to turn the power back on, everything was ready.

Did I mention that I had supper almost ready, when the power went out? Well somebody forgot to turn off the stove. It was off, right? I was so busy figuring out how to get the potatoes finished, it didn't dawn on me to turn the stove off. When the power went back on, there was a pizza box sitting on the stove. I was in the garage dealing with chickens, when Dh came running out with this pizza box, that a small corner was on fire (smouldering, not actual flames). Oops.

I have no idea why he didn't toss it in the sink right next to him, and wet it down, or toss some baking soda on it, which I always keep a box of, right by the stove, in plain sight. Instead, he came running outside with the pizza box. He slipped, and fell. Broke his toe, and hurt his ribs really bad on one side. So I'm in the dog house big time now, because it's ALL my fault for not turning off the stove, right?

Oh no, series of bad events! I'm sorry DH was damaged but I think you are only half responsible. The sink would have been the obvious and more safe method of dealing with a smoldering cardboard box.

Omg, poor guy. I can see how easy it is to forget what's on when the power goes out. Don't blame yourself. Stuff happens. He made the decision to run around with the box.
Glad to hear you got your power back.

Glad you got power back Clue. Sorry DH got himself hurt. Better yet glad your house didn't burn down.

Don't feel bad, could have happened to anyone. I agree, 50/50 split on blame.

Hope everyone dealing with Ian's aftermath is hanging in there and staying safe.

We are still drought dry here so if y'all want, bottle up some of that extra water you are dealing with and ship it here!

Surprisingly, there isn't much extra (fresh, rain type) water now. Ian sucked it up, and took it with it, when it went. On the other hand, Ft. Meyers was hit with storm surge, meaning salt water rose way higher than normal. Up to 9 feet in some areas. It swept away a great deal of the town (buildings, and houses), and at least one of their bridges. Not sure if the other one is safe. That wasn't the only place that happened, but they did seem to get more than their fair share of the damages from storm surge.
