The Old Folks Home

Morning everyone. The day before Thanksgiving where every cook is standing in the chaos that is their kitchen and thinking....what am I forgetting?

@CapricornFarm I LOVE your snow people especially the guy with the dog at his side. You are turning into quite the artist/sculptor with clay.

Question about the dog. How did you do it? Is it hollow and formed or solid?
Thank you! The dog has a Hollow body. I have been working with clay on and off since high school.
Did you notice the dog is peeing on the snowman?

During the winter holidays, my biggest weakness is Eggnog.

With rum!
THAT is my downfall!

Just give me my personal spiked gallon. . And I will suck it down... and watch the pounds add up!

Anyway... I finally, said enough of that.

So, I just go cold turkey with the eggnog. With booze or without... I just keep my mitts off.

It is imperative that I continue to lose weight... so that I don't have to go on pills for my cholesterol.... so sacrifices... they must be made.

And there is NO WAY I AM GIVING UP BUTTER OR FATTY MEAT.... so.... less weight is the path I am on.

It has been working... my cholesterol numbers were a bit better this past summer.

And you folks... with your 1 pound a week thing.... as if I could!

1 year of work... and I am down 20 pounds.

But... that was enough for the numbers to get better.

So... I want 15 more pounds off... this year (D Day for me is mid summer).

So.... chugging along.

With my messed up shoulder I went up maybe 3 pounds... but luckily, now that the shoulder is improving... I am back on my very slow weight loss track.

For me, I have found that any food eaten late in the day goes straight to fat.

And the crackers.... stay away from the crackers, and the Cheetoes! Talk about "plastic" food, the sole purpose of which is to add on the pounds!

I also chew lots of gum. When I want a second portion.... which is always.... I put a stick of gum in my mouth.

But... I STILL eat my pure delicious butter, and the kids still make me eggs Benedict whenever I get a hankering... because hot butter and egg yolks is pure heaven! Even better when you eat it with fatty bacon slices! Hint, toss on some fresh greens to cut the fat.

I saw my biggest weight loss the first week, about three pounds I think. After that about a half a pound to a pound a week. Doctor gave me 2 or 3 months to get down to 125 pounds, can't remember which anymore. It was tough but I was dieting over the summer when we are more active with wood harvest which made it easier.

Doctor doesn't want me to go lower but I set 120 as my personal goal. This morning I was at 121.8 so as long as I stay in the ballpark between 125 and 120 I'm happy although I'll be happier if I can hang closer to 120. The lowest I saw was 119.

@Alaskan, that was my motivation to lose weight. Tried several meds for cholesterol and I didn't tolerate any of them. Lots of side effects that I could live without so it was worth the struggle. Doctor said I was motivated and I was.

What the instructions call soft boil stage is actually soft ball stage, when a bit dropped in water makes a ball you can manipulate with your fingers. Hard ball stage is when the ball hardens and cracks.
Look up the actual temps for soft ball, hard ball, etc. and use a candy thermometer for more accurate and repeatable results.

Me too!

Yes, I did! :lau

That helped me too.

Ok, I went to the Dr. today. I was asking the (new) nurse if she could print out my weight for the past few months. She couldn't do that, but mentioned I've been losing 5 lbs. a month for the past few months. Wait a dang minute. I asked her what I weighed last month. She told me. I asked her what I weighed now. She told me, and said it was 5 lbs. I didn't say anything else, but her math was totally WRONG. I didn't say anything about it to her.

When the Dr. came in, I mentioned it. I told her that between the number the nurse gave for last month, and the number she gave for this month, there was an 11 lb. difference, NOT 5. The doctor laughed. For cancer patients, weight loss can be a symptom. Any weight loss of 5 lbs, or more triggers an alert. It wasn't the actual number of pounds lost, that the nurse was seeing, but the 5 lb. alerts.
