Debbie? My first name too! Welcome to the Old Folk's thread. I am in Virginia, so it normally is not that cold here. We had been having an unusually warm fall until this cold wave hit. Suddenly the hoses are frozen. I had hoped to sell all of the chickens before now, so I have not set up water warmers in all of the coops.
I need to try and sleep, it's nearly 4:30 now. Nice to chat a bit. Hope you hang around with us when you can.

We have the woodstove going all the time now. It burns out overnight and the furnace comes on. Which is ok, because otherwise the mudroom and basement would freeze. So the stove suppiles about 70-80% of our heat when it gets into the 20s at night.

If it doesn't get below 40(ish), the furnace doesn't need to come on.

But thank goodness for electric blankets!!!

It's 38 outside right now, 68 inside the house. I didn't run any heat all night, but will run the heat just before the kids wake up to go to school. The chickens seem to like the Sweeter Heaters. The duck is in a pop-up dog playpen in the breakfast nook area. She loves that too.

The only times I really miss my home area down where you are is when I hear Grady Judd speak about his latest pervert roundup and when it gets cold up here. And to day it is cold up here.

When it's cold like this I try to dress in layers. This seems to work best as I can remove a layer at a time down to where the law permits outdoors anyway.

We burn wood most of the winter and we'll have windows open which is crazy. No need to weatherize when you burn wood, that's for sure! But if that goes out or it's not worth it, the propane kicks in to a toasty 69. And amen to that about electric blankets! Love mine.
