The Old Folks Home

I'm back inside where it is a toasty 69°. As soon as my coffee is finished I'm going to test the electric blanket out until the thermometer sees at least 50°. I made good use of an old trolling motor fishing coat this morning. It blocks the wind and keeps me warm and has a warm hood. The chickens weren't sure it was me but once I talked to them enough they were finally convinced that it was safe to come out of there coops for so me scratch.

When I went to turn on the heat, we discovered the heat wouldn't kick on. After a call to the company that installed it, we were told that the make and model unit we have, needs something on the circuit board upgraded. It's a free fix, so they'll be here sometime today.

When the power goes out here, the furnace doesn't run. Or the well pump. We have a generator, but don't run it constantly. So the woodstove keeps us warm. We would be lost without it.

I'm dreading the day we're too old to cut and split our own wood. Hopefully that is 15-20 years away. Or at least 10.

In my 30's I cut and sold firewood in NW MO. Didn't burn it then. When back in FL on the few cold nights we had I did get to burn in an open fireplace. If I ever move again I would very much like to have a modern wood burning stove that would be very efficient.

Afternoon ladies and gents of the senior persuasion.

Hope everyone survived Thanksgiving with the acceptable amount of overeating and moaning afterwards.

It's been unreasonably cold here also. Several mornings back the low as 11° when I got up and it had the bad taste to actually snow 3+ inches. The cold spell finally broke today and the birds were able to get outside.

We harvested close to 16 cords of firewood this year. All of it hardwood, oak and hickory. In the early fall we go out and clear out the deadfall where we want to cut trails to walk and ride our dirt bikes and burn it in the fall. It's pretty bad firewood but puts out enough BTUs that it warms the house without overheating it. Trust me, when the low temp is 11 I want that wood stove cranking on oak or hickory.

I segued from Thanksgiving into making Christmas cookies to stick in the freezer where they can be less of a temptation. Am I sampling one? Well...ya, of course. Gotta make sure they are fit to eat, lol.

Stay warm everyone! Or cool for all of you that have the good sense to live somewhere where winter means high temps are in the frigid 50s.
