The Old Folks Home

My middle son is turning 15 today. He said that he didn't want much for his birthday, but he did want us to have a "date" like we did when they (3 boys) were little. I started the tradition when they were three or four. I would take them out, one at a time, usually on their birthday, and teach then how to behave on a date. We would go out to eat, shopping for a present, and to a movie. I would have them open the doors for me, pull out my chair, and order food for me. I gave them the money to pay and let them carry the tickets. That has always been an option for a birthday but once overnight friends, and hunting trips with dad became other options, dates fell out of favor. Until last week.

Today will be sunny and the high will be near 70. I have two beds ready to plant and a gift card to Lowe's. I am behind in my spring cleaning of coops and planting beds, but I have nothing to do that is more important than that date.
That's so awesome! You have apparently done quite well raising your children! What a great idea to teach them how to treat their future women! I may to steal that if I ever have a son :) Get my man to take out the daughter! That sounds like a great birthday present.

Once upon a time (1985) I stayed on an atol of Lombok called Gili Trawangan. It was the most picture perfect little island with amzing coral, white sand beaches and snokelling.

Pak Majid's hotel has a dorm for 6 bucks a night including 3 meals a day. On the second day I moved into a bungallow with an English guy - five dollars each. It had electricity from dark till 12 midnight and cold cold beer. A great place for 2 or 3 days. I was actually saddened by the travelers there that had been holed up for two weeks on the island. With so much to see in Indonesia, I thought it was a waste to just hang out on the beach. A visa was just 60 days.

Your daughter is doing it right.

I ended up traveling along the island chain to Flores and Komodo Island. We sacrificed a goat and hung it in a tree along a dry river bed. It was amazing to see those massive lizards consume the goat. The pictures were incredible.

I stayed a month in Indonesia on that visit. I spent $1000 in country all in. It was my first adventure traveling solo and one of the best experiences in my life.
WOW! That sounds amazing! I haven't yet been lucky enough to leave the country and I'm DYING to go to an island, but I would completely agree with you and would want to explore EVERYTHING!!! What a great deal too! I'd love to find some cheap places like that and spend all my money on local food and art!

Sounds like you did it right too.
It sometimes astounds me how cheap it is to be in the most amazing places on earth. What gives?

Some pictures have come through of her beach bungalow.

Especially when you're used to associating the name with a bouncy yellow chick.

WOW! Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful photos and tales from your daughter's trip! It looks like she is having an amazing time!!! I can live vicariously through her! :)

Spring is in the air here too. We are at about 50 degrees here today and the turkeys are in full spring mode.

Nearly 70 degrees here, today, and the Mosquitos are biting. Grrrrr. Itch, scratch.

I met with John the Contractor ( who also bakes - he brought me a piece of homemade apple pie and I gave him some duck eggs) at the Ranch. We have marked out the location for the new coop and adjacent pen, plus discussed building three side-by-side breeding pens.

:weee

He will start on Wednesday.

Oz, there are three nearby bed & breakfast inns - hope to see you in the spring!

Jason, the Pub had the following beers on tap: Kilt Lifter, Newcastle, West Coast Green Flash IPA, Boont Amber ale, Boddington Pub Ale, Guinness, Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin, Great White Shark, Stella Artois, Rubicon, and Firestone IPA. One tap is out right now... Dunno what is usually there , sorry. Many other beers in bottles.

Time for me to chow down on the omelet I ordered, made from 3 eggs I brought straight from the Ranch. (The manager buys eggs for her personal household use, but the price point for The Pub is too low for me to sell eggs to 'em right now. I handed her 3 extra eggs to use for my omelet.)

Being a regular has its benefits. ;)
