The Old Folks Home

Good morning, OF. Another day of getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner.

Can you tell I don't do this very often, like once or twice a year?

Today is (hopefully) my last trip into civilization until after the 4 day weekend. I need to get the last bunch of groceries, some hydraulic fluid for the plow, and another blade for the chainsaw. (Hubby likes to have 2-3 on hand. Makes sense to me.)

There is no way, short of emergency or large amounts of money (numbers that have 6 or 7 digits before the decimal point), that I will go anywhere on Black Friday. Just cannot go into that crowd of humanity and not go mad.

Remember the "inner child" stuff from days gone by? My sanity is like that. "No, no, little sane Sally, I promise I won't make you go to the mall, or drive down 28th Street in Grand Rapids. You can just stay home here with hubby, the dog, and the chickens."

A long time ago, I worked in a mall. Christmas time was definitely NOT the most wonderful time of the year.
I agree. I had to work the Toy Department one year at a big box store.... Best day of my life was the day I gave them their keys to the store back. Some things just are not worth the pay.

Howdy old folks. Haven't been around for a long while here. Been bouncing around for a few months. Life has been a bit crazy. Hurt myself twice over the spring and summer riding my dirt bike. Dislocated rib (trust me, you don't want to do that) and then injured my right shoulder/rotator muscle under my arm that lead to tendonitis that I'm still dealing with. On top of it, DH has had some heath issues that we have been dealing with. Old age stuff. Nothing serious, just tedious. Fun Fun.

Hatched my last clutches of eggs over the early spring. Starting to have some issues with inbreeding so I said this is it. No more. The ones I have will live out their lives with me and I won't add any more due to the Marek's threat and to frankly, me being 71 now and it's getting harder to deal with the extra work. Especially after being busted up this summer and DH not being able to help me as much as he usually does. I figure the fact that my flock has lasted this long without any more major losses to Marek's is award/not to mention miracle, enough at this point in time.

I've dropped in from time to time to see who was around. Thread used to be super busy. Maybe it can be rejuvenated a bit?

Hope y'all stay healthy enough and illness free to enjoy Thanksgiving. Seems as though every year we have more to be grateful to God the Creator for, mainly, still being alive to see another Thanksgiving!

One depression era money saving technique was to slice potatoes into round slices and fry them and then make a spudwich. Meat was going to the troops. I can remember my parents talking about saving up stamps to buy things. Rationing was common I guess for basic commodities.

I can remember my mother talking about meat rationing and how it wasn't unusual for people to buy horse meat at the store when beef wasn't available.

I have one of her antique cook books from the WWII era that talks about planting a 'Victory Garden' and urged every woman to plant a back yard garden to help supply food for the men and women fighting at the front.

She was also was responsible for going around the neighborhood at night making certain everyone had their 'lights out' shades pulled in their windows after sunset. Guess the fear of the US mainland being targeted was a real one.

I doubt if the youngsters today would be able to cope with things the way the 'greatest generation' did during the last WW. They wouldn't have much choice though. They would learn.

Hey, OF, late to the party. Seems like I've been on the go since daybreak. Not certain why, but my shoulders have chosen to hurt today. @microchick Good to see you. 71? What are you going to do when you get old like me? :old
Probably the same that I'm doing now, LOL.....just slower!
