The Old Folks Home

X2 on the whole post.
The only livestock I'm allowed here is chickens. But I am allowed 85 and 5 roosters. (they didn't say anything about cockerels  )
I also have bee hives and native pollinator houses, peaches, nectarines, apricots, apples, persimmons, mulberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, goji berries, asparagus, herbs and four 4'X40' raised beds for seasonal veggies. One of the chicken coops is long and narrow at the north end of the veggie beds. There's a pop door over each bed plus one on the north side and I have a hoop pen the length of the beds that I can move over a bed after the veggies are done and let the chickens in that bed. The raspberries are north of the coop so after the berries are gone I turn the same flock in there. That's mid summer and it's cooler on that side.

Wow!
It's 53F (11C) right now at 5 AM. Sad to say though it will be below freezing at least 4 nights next week and more hard freezes at the end of the month. I may have to wait till April to start up the automatic water.

How's the ventilation? Do they have room to move between a warm area and a cool space?

It's said the if dogs died as often as chickens, people wouldn't own very many dogs.

That's not old, and you'll never catch me. You're welcome anyway. I'm sure we have some other old timer imposters on here>

I know this is a chicken forum but I also had bees but sadly lost them to the mysterious hive collapse. Would like to set my hives back up but am a little gun shy.
Live in the middle of orchards so know I have a good place for them so any insight would be appreciated. Had the hives for 2 years before I lost them.

It's a chicken forum but this isn't necessarily a chicken thread.

I've been struggling with the bees for the last few years. A couple things I discovered. You need good air movement around the hives and try to eliminate excessive moisture (like low lying areas). I thought shade would be good later in the day but I was wrong. Being out in full sun is better. Switching out solid bottom boards for full screen bottom boards with a beetle trap will help control mites and small hive beetles.

Feeding all winter and any time there isn't a good nectar flow is really important.

OK, so I am just beside myself.....

Not sure if you guys remember but Jackie O got poked in the eye two weeks ago and can't see out of it anymore. She has adapted to walking with her head turned and I have her with some smaller chicks for company and I'll re introduce her back to the flock with them all in a large group.

She is 12-14 weeks old....I lost count.

Notice how I keep saying she????

SHE crowed today!!!! Does she look like a he? it was a weird cackle try to crow...I'm hoping she is really a she and was just confused. What does she look like to you guys? She's a Black Orp.

Sorry, Fro. I was really hoping she was a she, but crowing almost never happens that young with a pullet. I did have a production red hen that layed and crowed but she only started that after she was two. I hate that you have so many boys in that batch. How about I save you a couple of girls for Jack?

I did have my bees in an area where it had some shade. Weird thing that happened one hive swarmed twice within 2 weeks couldn't figure that one out. Both hives made thru the second summer but by late fall they were gone.

That can be from a couple things. The swarm may have re-entered the hive if the queen didn't follow the initial swarm. More likely, 2 weeks apart, it was a secondary swarm with a virgin queen. Those are usually much smaller swarms.

Here is a photo that a friend on another thread built...a mason bee home. Hmmm, wondering
if the wasps would like it too though. Although, the wasps around here like to build up under things
and make those big ol ugly round nests.

Should add, it's almost done. Would like to have one of these around my fruit trees.

I would love to have some girls. I only ended up with one BCM pullet (I'm keeping the BCM cockerel as well) and two, maybe three Black Orp girls and one EE pullet that I'm still on the fence about. I think it may be wishful thinking that she is a girl but I'm going to wait for an egg or a crow.

If you could I would totally drive back up there and buy them off you!! You're so good to us Wisher!!
