The Old Folks Home

Wow ChickenCanoe! Your farm sounds perfect to me! I just can't move any further north, I'm not far, but it gets too cold HERE to me! I love the sound of Canucks's place, but I just couldn't do it! I love all your fruit trees! We have pants, that aren't doing good, so we'll have to prune in the fall (we just moved here last July) and blueberry trees, a pomegranate, a fig, some strawberries just planned last year, and some grape vines that need some work.

How's the ventilation? Do they have room to move between a warm area and a cool space?

It's said the if dogs died as often as chickens, people wouldn't own very many dogs.
Good news, today is the first day I have not come home to a dead chick.....my job is an hour away and I fret the whole way after having the first death on Tuesday. The brooder is in a tiny bathroom sitting in the bath tub. I have the heat lamp about 3ft above the brooder box. The one I did not expect to make it, is closer because I have been wetting it to de-mat it. I am letting it go now because it seems to be getting a lot out itself. It keeps scratching its head and I think that is because of the matting. I want to put it in the box with the others but am afraid they will pick on it, though when I put other chicks with him/her, it pecks them really hard. I have turned the heat lamp off for awhile because I noted they were really warm when I picked the chicks up for butt inspection. . Do you think I should turn on the bathroom exhaust fan? Any other suggestions...Please?

I am just jealous that you all live in the south! Wish I were there with you expecting more of this next week

Here in the Sacramento valley we get:

Not too much rain though. There will not be many:

We are currently under a voluntary 20% water ration. Farmers get 0% allocation of water for irrigation. Well drillers are very busy!
