The Old Folks Home

Yesterday i saw some of the worst living conditions for chickens ever. They were all in little makeshift cages. I wanted to take the all. The males couldnt even stand up because of the cage height.

That is sad!

We can't save them all though.

I had to tell her that about 4 of her cages were out of water. It was about 90 degrees f. She replied, "yeah there isnt an easy way to water chickens and chuckled". I gave the chicks a bath when we got em home

Dust them and keep them in Quarantine for two weeks. You do not want to introduce bugs or disease.

Looks like we might still get some sort of harvest from our garden this year. The cherry tomatoes are coming along nicely, and we just discovered our first beans.

Wonderful garden pics! Congrats!

I'm in the mood to ramble.....you have been warned.

I'm driving to Shreveport, LA Friday to meet my Silver Campine partner and do a chicken swap. Texas has a law against non-residents bringing chickens into the state. She will meet me in Shreveport, which is just across the state line. Now, for some reason, it is not illegal for her to transport out-of-state chickens back into the state, as long as she is NPIP. I guess that is the same as having a permit to transport chickens across state lines....I dunno'. I have to put up a partition in my breeder barn and cull the spring chicks before I go. The partition is to isolate the new birds I will be bringing back, and the cull is so I can choose the ones I want to keep, then choose the second best ones to take to her. I will be taking her my very best rooster, several cockerels, and several pullets. I will replace the rooster with her pick of her best rooster, and what ever else she brings me. It will be somewhat of a surprise, but I'm sure a pleasant one. Her birds are much better than mine.........so far.

I was taking all three boys, but one got grounded, the middle one went with me to the coast two weeks ago and decided to stay home for a social event, and the youngest has just about decided that he doesn't want to miss the last night of vacation Bible school. I may take the oldest (grounded) one, after all. He will just be along for the ride, though, and maybe to help with the birds and driving.

I lost a Silver Campine cockerel yesterday, to heat, I suspect. It was one of the nicer ones, but if he can't take the heat I wouldn't want to use him anyway. I pulled him out of the pen and went to get a bag out of the workshop. I had my little house dog, Paisley, with me and tried to get her to come into the workshop with me. She wouldn't come in, but instead wanted to sniff around under the workshop, which is about a foot off the ground. I stepped inside, doubled bagged the dead bird, and started back out only to find Paisley running toward the house.

She was moving very strangely and wouldn't put any weight on her right front leg. I called her and she turned around and hobbled back toward me. It looked like her right shoulder and hip were hurt and I feared broken bones from how she acted and whimpered when I palpated them. There was no blood or abrasions. She seemed to have taken a hard blow on that side as if she had been hit by a car, although that is impossible. I suspect she went into the goat pen and one of the goats butted her, hard. I took her to he vet this morning and he said she was only banged up, and prescribed anti-inflammatory, pain pills, and bed rest. I know he must have noticed that she is a Jack Russell, how's that going to happen? She was laid out on the pillow in her bed as long as she was hurting, once the med kicked in, she was wide open again. I put her in her crate with a note to the kids that she was to go out to potty on a leash and back to the crate. We'll see.......
