The Old Folks Home

Peep, those apples look soooo good. We don't have apple trees, and fresh apples here in Florida. It's too hot for them. The ones from the grocery store are not the same. Several years ago, I had some online friends, and we traded fruits, and nuts. I would send a huge box of grapefruit, and tangelos to each of them, and they in turn, sent me gallon bags of shelled pecans, a boxes of freshly picked apples, assorted jams, and jellies, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. We all ate well.

I have no fruit trees. And this is the first year that I haven't gone insane buying lots of peaches and stuff at the store. I sent my SIL to the fruit dept at the grocery store and he brought me a measly 2 peaches. I was steamed until I found out that they were $4 a pound. Jeez. I bought them last year for $1.25. I guess I'll eat canned this year.

Do chickens eat apples?

Mine don't but others do

Word of warning, I read somewhere (might even have been this thread) that someone cut up the apples for the chickens into bite-sized pieces and sadly one choked and died. So maybe do not cut them up too small and leave them at a nice size where they can just peck off a small amount.

If you don't mind spending the time, you could also grate the apples into their other food... I'd just cut them in half and let them at it though. Unless you are giving it to chicks, then I'd use the small side of the grater and make sure there are no big chunks of skin.

Ah, thank you Lacy, never thought of that!

My girls were scared of the apple when I tried it; the same with a corn cob .. you would think the fruit and vegetables were going to eat them, not the other way around! I am definitely going to try grating the apple though.

I have found with my young chicks, I need to leave the new food in their run for a few days to a week, before they start to eat it. Once they try it tpugh, they quickly learn that it is wonderful! :D

I left the corn cob in the run for two days and they all veered around it like it was a chicken trap. I grabbed the cob, stripped the corn off it and they gobbled it out of my hand like they had not eaten for days!

I did persevere with watermelon and eventually, one adventurous one decided to take a taste and now they all love it!

The sad thing here, I am not talking about chicks, these are fully grown sooks!
