The Old Folks Home

Quote: The initial Mareks happens when they are chiks. That one has symptoms like stumbling and etc. A year or so later, 5% or so will get cancer from it.

Humans have a lot of viruses that turn into cancer too, for instance a type of ovarian cancer comes from Human Papaloma virus. They are finding more all the time too.

So I made a distinction because my hen was 1.5 years old and did not die from the initial infection.

Thanks for the info! I have been lucky to have never dealt with it in my own flock. I hope I never get the first-hand knowledge that you and many others have.
The one that had cancer was a Golden Comet. I am switching over to breeds from breeders who have been breeding for resistance to Mareks, so hopefully I will not have any more problems with it.

The rest of my flock is doing fine so far!

Hopefully yours are resistant. All chickens get some type of Mareks. Even the ones that are inoculated will still have 2 to 3% get the cancer from it. Working on resistance seems to be the best way to go, since the vaccine only lowers the percentage that die form Mareks by one or two points.

Very cute-- love the rich colored down.

Yummm, I will be making this really soon. I created a Christmas game to distribute gifts to my grown children and grandchildren called Holidopoly and the grand prize this year was An Annual Subscription to the Jelly of the Month Club (think of the movie Christmas Vacation). My grandson won it and got two jars for Jan. and Feb., Dewberry Jam and Pepper Jelly. Couldn't have gone to a better winner; he was so excited to be taking these back to college with him. Now I'm having to come up with 10 more flavors to make and this one sounds so much better than just plain Apple Butter. Thank you.
You are clever!!

Quote: This morning was an increase and I was out without my coat. Felt like a heat wave.

I was a very luck dork last night and today! When I come home with feed, the flock knows it and I get surrounded by "starving" poultry as I unload the bags. Obviously I fill all the feeders before removing the other bags from the car and storing them in their garbage cans. If I don't do the Feed Them Now thing right away, most of the flock will follow me, clamoring for sustenance.

If I don't come home with feed, I they still gather round just to see what I did bring home. I can then walk back down the driveway to close the drive gates.

Uhhh... I forgot to close the gates yesterday afternoon after unloading the feed. Got up late this morning and there it was, wiiiide open. No wand'ring birds, but can you imagine if loose dogs had been trolling the neighborhood!?!?! Or a real predator slunk onto the property during the night???

Madge the young Tom turkey followed me down to the gate when I closed it.

Maybe I need more post-a-notes to remind me of this simple task.

gryeyes, it gets worse each year. I have reached the point where I can't remember where I put the post-a-notes.

Last week I brewed a cup of coffee with the one cup coffee maker without putting a cup to receive the coffee. Kitchen floor got a good cleaning. Then there was the day I overflowed the sink. Two nights ago I never latched the gate on one of my dog pens after feeding. the next morning when I went out to water Berta Brown was looking out of the pen with a happy smile on her face. Why she didn't go off hunting??? Got lucky. Let me rephrase that: "I was a very lucky OLD dork."

I put a grilled cheese sandwich on the stove (in a pan, at least) two nights ago and then promptly forgot about it until the house started filling with smoke.

I know it gets worse, too.

THis is definitely the right thread for me!! Done them all at one point or another.

Thank you everyone. Life goes on in the chicken world for me. Have to share a couple of pictures of my hatch. I had 5 go into lock down, 3 made it. The Nankin, and two blacks with white. The one, my DH says looks like a penguin. Happy Feet!

Happy Feet. :))

Check out those feet! Looks like boy feet.
My pure RIR's go into lock down tomorrow. I have 6 going into lock down out of 10.
I had a quitter tonight since the last time I candled. Wanting some good egg layers.
Still can't get myself an olive egger. Will be looking for some of those eggs. They have
to be the right dark green. I want a dark green egg! Silly me.
