The Old Folks Home

DiDi, it's saying it is only 1 degree now.
I just had to put a chicken down. My Miss Piggy. That, was hard. She was not doing well at all. Losing weight. Never really came out of the moult real well. She wasn't eating like she used to..thus the name Miss Piggy, used to..a lot! Just stayed in the coop..so I went to put her up on a roost, because she hasn't been able to jump up for a long time. I could not believe what I was feeling. That breast bone was waay out there, no meat what so ever. Brought her in and looked, bare, and very red. She was just fading away. I've been watching her the last few days, knowing in the back of my mind what I should do for her. I loved that silly bird. My leghorn. What a sweetheart. Always coming around me, would squat for me. Was always kind to newbies put in. My husband really liked her too, heck, all of the kids too. They won't be happy when they hear Miss Piggy is gone. :(

She was real good at begging at the door, she would click her
nails on the metal part on the bottom of the doorway. This is her
last summer. This cold weather! Harder on some of the chickens
thank others. My NN isn't liking it too well..stays in the coop except
to come out and see what I have for a treat, or food.
Cynthia, sorry about the loss of you chicken. They really are special, aren't they?

This happens sometime in Far Northern CA. Growing up, our house was in a Prune Orchard, so the time or two there was frozen fog, the leafless trees looked like something out of a Narnia Book....Well I was a kid then ok?

It is also hard to breath in all those ice crystals too! Much smaller than snow.....
Interesting description, I can picture this but breathing in ice crystals, doesn't sound comfortable at all.

I had never heard of frozen fog before moving to Utah. Even all the years I lived up in Maine, never had frozen fog. Frozen fog looks like someone sprinkled glitter in the air (not heavily, just a light sprinkle). It is a very light snow (all day long in Utah apparently). It does make the trees look really pretty becasue all the branches are covered with hoar frost. When I said that to DH the other day, I immediately spelled out h-o-a-r so that he wouldn't get the two terms mixed up.

I don't think we are going to get to 25 degrees today.
And now I have learned two things today which puts me one up for tomorrow. :)

Cynthia dark green eggs-- do you mean dark olive eggs??

Yes, I am wanting to hatch some dark olive eggs. They are hard to come by. At least for me! Your blue girl I got from you lays the prettiest egg. It's smooth too, know what I mean? I love the smooth ones. And, if I didn't know better, I would say it came from a Maran. It is very dark. I love it.
Not, for that ever eluding olive egg. Think, of a green olive..that green is what I want. :D

There is something really wrong with me - I am enjoying these 3 house chickens entirely too much. (Diapers were shipped last week, hope I'll get 'em tomorrow.)

Had a scare when they went outside and Jack misplaced himself, day before yesterday. I was up all night with a flashlight, looking for him every few hours, all night long. Come dawn, he didn't show up, so I went to bed at last, really worried and sad. But in the afternoon, I heard his crow! He ran right up to me.

No clue where he'd been. With his one blind eye, I knew he'd be fair game for anything. It's one of the reasons he's a house rooster.

The two pullets will eventually be integrated into the flock. But right now, having them rest on the foot of my recliner is so nifty. They tel me little cheken stories as they fall asleep.

juststruttin from here in CA has three versions of OEs. Cream legbar x Crele Pene, Marans OEs and Barnie X OE. I have pullets of all three and am waiting on them to get to POL.

From Juststruttin:

Your should be able to get hatching eggs from both of them.

The Tide Rolled over Notre Dame in the BCS national championship game in Miami last night!

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how you remove all doubt about who's #1 in the nation!

Three National Championships in four years; FOUR in four years by Alabama schools! It's a State Dynasty! I will (and you have no idea how out of character this is for me) share this achievement with the Tigers, because our state has a lot to be proud of! Congratulations to "my other boys" and a respectful nod to the Irish who showed that they are a class act.

Is it too early to say "repeat' for 2013?

Wisher, I thought about you last night -- knowing what a big fan you are -- and wondered if you were at home watching TV or actually in Miami. bought your t-shirt yet?
