The Old Folks Home

There was a interesting situation with our chickens just now. I heard a commotion from the yard, and went out to check. When I opened the door, I saw Veera flying back into our yard over the fence, and the neighbors dog barking on the other side of the fence. I hope that will teach the chickens to stay within our yard. And my god can that chicken fly. I didn't see the start of her trajectory, but she was 3 feet above the 5 foot fence when I came out, and landed about 50 feet from the spot she crossed the fence, right outside their run. The fact that she's been fasting on the nest has probably made her a bit lighter, but still, a pretty good flight.

They can get quite agile when pressed. She saved her own life. It only takes a quick bite from a dog and they're gone.

My penedesencas (as Ron puts it) are very respectful of fences and will stay inside a 3 foot fence. In fact I had been keeping roosters in a 2' pen. If pressed though they can fly straight up 10'.

Speaking of chickens.

I have chicks coming out the wazoo.

I have 7 older chicks, 11 hatched last week, 11 hatched this week and 4 more are pipping. There's another 60 eggs that will hatch in a staggered fashion. 12 due Friday and 15 more due Monday.

Yeah, the ones that go over the fence are agile enough to come back when threatened, and the only dog that really is a threat, is so big that she doesn't move all that quickly. I'm not even sure that she'd actually kill a chicken if she'd somehow manage to get a hold of one. Still, I'm annoyed that they go over the fence, but I'm not prepared to keep them in the run full time either. And putting in a net over our whole yard is not something I'm willing to consider either.

Sometimes it's better to hold your tongue. I've been following a raw milk debate in another thread, and I have to admit to having to click that "Clear the Editor" button a couple of times.
Some of the discussion in that thread is just plain mind boggling. In an effort to say something positive about some of the posters on that thread - they are really quite passionate about their milk!

I read something about the FF thread getting weird but I don't know what the issue was. I used to follow it but the same questions were asked over and over I quit going there. I noticed the lady that started the thread hasn't posted on it for 2 months.

some individuals got butt hurt when administration didn't kiss their behinds for "all they do for BYC" thinking the rules didn't apply to them.

I used to hang out in some of the roughest areas when I was young regardless of the city or country I was in. I stay close to home now.
When I moved here I lived much closer to work and used to walk to work each day. One day some of the folks I worked with asked where I parked. When I told them that I walked to work they started getting agitated and asked which way I walked. When I told them they started freaking out and told me that I was walking through a really dangerous part of town. Prior to the conversation I didn't feel unsafe walking through that area. I didn't think that it was the nicest part of town, but I didn't think it was dangerous. For a while after the conversation I paid a little more attention to the area that I was walking through and still didn't feel unsafe. I walked that way to work every day until I got married and moved. The most dangerous part of my walk was trying to cross a couple of streets at crosswalks.

Those are nice looking feathers, bama. Someone seems to be lurking behind the mower too.
thanks. They are hatchery quality brahmas. I was proud of them until i posted pics on the brahma breeders thread. They knocked my pride down pretty good. What type of cross did u use for ur olive eggs?

I don't think I've ever seen anything with the real Al Sharpton, my image of him is completely built up by SNL. I wonder how different he is in real life.

Now you made me curious about what that word was. We Scandinavians haven't always been that capable of being politically correct though. This is a photo of a liquorice box that we have in our kitchen. I think it's quite pretty, but for some reason this kind of packaging isn't used anymore...

It starts with N and means stingy, miserly, mercenary, penurious and is often used in heated arguments about financial matters....with unintended consequences. David Howard, a D.C. mayor's aide, tendered his resignation after an uproar about his use of the word. After much thought the mayor rehired him; A student at a university brought up issues of race and language reform in teaching curriculums when the word was quoted as used by Chaucer; There also :as a lawsuit against the Mendocino School Board when a teacher used the word and nine members of the Board tried to oust her for racial issues. She sued for defamation and, I believe, won.

The upshot of all these examples is that ignorance knows no echelons.
