The Old Folks Home

Well, it looks like Topi is headed for the freezer too. Apparently I'm the only person he isn't aggressive towards. He attacked Karin this morning again, so it will be processing time tomorrow morning again. Might be just as good, some of the pullets have started acting nervous around him. I don't think he is overmating them, but perhaps they feel differently. I was sort of hoping to hatch some of his chicks in spring, since he should carry OE genes, but perhaps we'll have to leave that thought. That will just leave us with the Sussex roo then, I can still cross him with our OE pullet, but looking at how bland our Sussexes seem to be, I don't know how interesting that will be. The OE roo over Alho hens would of been more interesting.

Of course, due to space constraints, all of these breeding plans would have required some of our hens not to survive the winter, so this added space from getting rid of another tenant will come in handy when the weather gets worse and the chickens will have to spend more time in the coop and run. Anyone here have any experience with how chickens like playing in snow?

Oh, I forgot to mention our broody update. Veera slept on the roosts last night, and came out with the rest of the flock in the morning, hasn't gone back into the nest yet. I think she's starting to go back to normal. Hopefully she'll start laying soon again.

Quote: I was not sure what they were just that I had seen them. Thanks.

I know I would rather have some of Ron's eggs!

Vehve we get quite a bit of snow here and my birds deal with it. They don't like it a whole bunch but they deal with it. If it gets real deep I will shovel a clear area in their pen.

My plan is to keep the run snow free and covered with bedding, and hopefully they'll enjoy playing in the snow outside the run. Not much free ranging to do in the snow though. I don't think they are too thrilled about pine needles as a source of greens.

Good grief!!!! 30o Really??? Everything a beautiful crispy white

There goes the gardens. Another year with no month without frost, sigh. Oh well, don't have to worry about finding time to can, again. Might as well just donate my equipment to the charity shop in the town to the south. When I opened the coop this morning my chickens looked at me like "you've got to be kidding me!".
When I look at all those beautiful jars of pickles and apples and tomatoes and........ still left on the shelf from a couple years ago it makes me wonder, "what ever happened to global warming?"
