The Old Folks Home

Ron, I am wondering if we are going to be plagued with the polar vortex's all winter this year???

Out here the polar vortex did not reach us. We are more worried about a fourth year of drought. UCD did a study and predicted that we would be low on rainfall again.

I really hope not.

Quote: Yep Ron. Been following that. Think I'll take our weather even tho it's frustrating. We had the coldest on record. We had no problems getting fuel last winter tho many of our friends did. Not taking chances this year, we're getting a bigger tank.
Up side for us is we broke a several year drought. Haven't seen the forests so green in years and even the wild berry patches were able to recover. I have been following the news and you guys are in really bad shape! I can't imagine. Our drought never had that kind of impact tho we did have a couple of nasty forest fires and super low water levels in some of the lakes including the Great Lakes. I was glad to hear you made it through the fires close to you. Can't believe what's going on with both coasts right now, it's just crazy. One side is drowning, the other burning up.
Makes me nervous for what this winter will bring

@chickisoup I just stumbled upon a cheap greenhouse idea. Get one of those cheap tarp carports, and instead of the tarp, cover it with clear plastic. When the night frosts come, you can light a few candles inside the greenhouse to keep it above freezing. This won't help you this year anymore, but maybe next year. Also, storing large water containers inside the greenhouse would help stabilize heat.

the super blue egg layers, or a type of them would be Crested Cream Legbar x Arkansas Blue. If there is a difference in the blue gene, they would get both of them so they should be double blue for egg shell genes.

ron, what size do these Arkansas Blues lay..I would love a blue blue egg! Haven't had a true blue egg in a while. I have a couple of pullets out there that came from a pretty blue egg, but not as blue as I've seen. Do you by chance have any photos of your blue eggs?

This is the first dozen:

This is a batch set for hatching:

They are a year old and laying in the 57 to 64Gram range so they are large to extra large. The brown eggs are Penne eggs from my lightest brown egg laying hen.
