The Old Folks Home

Great thanks, I get my disability the end of the month, ok?

I could send you what they lay--you would be getting franken chickens though.....

Morning conversation.

Spouse "those peacocks are up on high ground today. No, you are not getting peacocks."

Me "what? I didn't say I was getting peacocks. Why no peacocks?"

Spouse "no peacocks. I said no"

Me "but why? Why not?"

Spouse "any peacocks show up, they will immediately die."

-sigh-

(Someones peacocks have gotten loose, haven't gotten caught yet)

Didn't say anything about peahens...

True! So true!!!

It depends on if the EE is Double dominant for the blue egg shell gene. OO is double dominant. Oo is single dominant. oo is double recessive so white.

Answer, you will get some white and some blue. If you work out the genetics, you can get all blue easily after enough generations because blue is dominant.

Good project

Is there a way to know if they're double O or will I know after they start laying?
I think I'd like to get some eggs from you as well, or maybe a young trio. Do you go to the Stockton show in January?

You can donate your canning equipment to me. I need everything, and the initial cost of getting set up with new equipment is quite pricey.

I was going to make that same suggestion but figured I would offer to pay postage.

Out here the polar vortex did not reach us. We are more worried about a fourth year of drought. UCD did a study and predicted that we would be low on rainfall again.

I really hope not.
Oh Lord! I hope they're wrong!

@chickisoup I just stumbled upon a cheap greenhouse idea. Get one of those cheap tarp carports, and instead of the tarp, cover it with clear plastic. When the night frosts come, you can light a few candles inside the greenhouse to keep it above freezing. This won't help you this year anymore, but maybe next year. Also, storing large water containers inside the greenhouse would help stabilize heat.

Those cheap carport structures are just that... cheap. The wind will destroy them (if you get a lot of wind) and so will a load of snow.

Also, someone suggested leaves in black bags for winter, I was going to suggest a bale of straw inside a very large black bag as it will store a lot of heat and release it in the evening. The sun has to be able to hit that black bag though... this is one of the things I'm working on for winter.

Cattle panels might work too, you could make a hoop greenhouse, that could be used as a run for the chickens in the winter.

My cattle panel hoop house for growing out chicks. I don't plan to use it in the winter, unless I really need to.
The view inside the hoop house from the middle to each end. Sorry about all the additional space in this post. I don't know what's causing it and I can't seem to fix it either.

I have been following the Arkansas Blues since they started posting about them and there have been no white egg layers yet. The UofArkansas Graduate student must have worked on making them double dominant for blue eggs.

I want to go to the Stockton show! If you are going to be there, that would give me a good reason to go to it.

Oh put it on me hu? You live a lot closer than I do. I hope I can attend this year. Last year I couldn't afford to go anywhere. I just might be able to put a cage in the back of the van and come just for the day. I'll just tell my husband its gonna take all day to go and pick up some blue egg layers! He should love that

! I'd love to show some birds but I'm getting pretty worrisome about what I'd be exposing my birds to.

Vehvre, I quoted but it didn't post. Thanks for liking my hoop coop. It went together amazingly fast and easy once the frame on the ground was finished. I should have tried harder to level the ground , but hey, it's together and its heavy enough that I don't think its going anywhere. The short stakes along the side are to keep it from bulging out plus I put posts at the corners and cemented them in. It is located over our septic system so I couldn't dig very deep. I made the holes bell-shaped since they couldn't be deep. I don't think anything will lift them out.
