The Old Folks Home

Oh put it on me hu? You live a lot closer than I do. I hope I can attend this year. Last year I couldn't afford to go anywhere. I just might be able to put a cage in the back of the van and come just for the day. I'll just tell my husband its gonna take all day to go and pick up some blue egg layers! He should love that

! I'd love to show some birds but I'm getting pretty worrisome about what I'd be exposing my birds to.

Vehvre, I quoted but it didn't post. Thanks for liking my hoop coop. It went together amazingly fast and easy once the frame on the ground was finished. I should have tried harder to level the ground , but hey, it's together and its heavy enough that I don't think its going anywhere. The short stakes along the side are to keep it from bulging out plus I put posts at the corners and cemented them in. It is located over our septic system so I couldn't dig very deep. I made the holes bell-shaped since they couldn't be deep. I don't think anything will lift them out.

I should have them all going by then. It is a ways to pick up chicks for sure!

I might like a half doz to dozen, too! The breed sounds intriguing.

Any chance you'll be mixing for a SBEL?

(I ask timidly knowing how fond you are of mixing at the moment.....)
I will add you to the list!

The Cream Legbars are on day 13 of incubation so I do not have the SBEL setup yet(the ones I know of are actually Ameracauna X Leghorn--The Arkansas Blues are kind of like this being Araucana x leghorn). I can start working on the cross next year but they will lose the blue genetics.

I need help I have tried to research this answer but I know I will find the answer quicker this way. Just went out to feed and water my 8 week old chicks and one is vert lethargic and had reddish smelly droppings on her feathers at the back I am suspecting cocci my question is can I give them the medication in the water along with the medicated food?

The feed is just to help build immunity and will not stop cocci. It is at a very low dose so it is safe to treat them.

Treat them now or as soon as possible. I hope you have 20% corid powder. Give it to all of them at the rate of 1.5tsp. per gallon. Make sure they drink it. Dip the beak of the sickest one and or use a dropper to get it to drink.

I hope they recover soon!

Detailed information:

Dimethox is another coci treatment

Corid Dosage:
If any show symptoms, all chicks should be treated there is 9 species of this disease and
ONLY 2 that have blood in the stool. Critical time is when chicks are between 4-16wks. of
age.
chicks need to be treated when they are 3-4wks of age. 20% CORID POWDER....1.5TSP. PER GALLON
FOR 5 DAYS and then another 5 days at 1/2 tps per gallon.
and to repeat it every 3wks if they have symptoms until they reach 9mos. of age. After this
its a good idea to put it once a week in their water.

From @casportpony
Due to some confusion on dose amounts regarding the powder, I decided to do some research and
this is what I have so far. For those of you that use powder Corid, if you have been using
1/2 teaspoon per gallon (~270mg) you haven't been using enough.

The preventative dose (.006%) for Corid Powder is 1/3 teaspoon.
The preventative dose (.006%) for Corid liquid is 1/2 teaspoon.

The moderate outbreak dose (.012%) for Corid Powder is 3/4 teaspoon.
The moderate outbreak dose (.012%) for Corid liquid is 1 teaspoon.

The severe outbreak dose (.024%) for Corid Powder is 1.5 teaspoons
The severe outbreak dose (.024%) for Corid liquid is 2 teaspoon.

Thanks so much, I am in a panic never had this happen before,we did have a lot of rain here and the run did get wet so wonder if that had something to do with it. I realize it is in the ground all the time but am sure the wet ground did not help. Will treat everyone and I have the one quarantined so hopefully I got on top of this in time.

cocci is very treatable if caught early.

If the sick one does not respond in a day or two, you can try Dimethox.

Keep us posted!

I've got some Legbar x Marans OE's going in my incubator right now... Well, at least I think I do. The Legbar shells are really too dense to see the veining this early in the game at Day 4. I was hoping to get some blue layers in there, but they (the auctions I bid) fell through before I set the eggs. I have CQ's, Welsummers and OE F1 & F2.... cammo colors!

Hmmm.... Any chance you'll be selling purebred blue packs, a mixed dozen of Arkansas Blues and Legbars? That would be a fun hatch!
(when my incubator is less crowded)
