The Old Folks Home

Last year, I had found a quick weight loss diet. It didn't look too bad so I thought I could try it for a while. Basically, you ate a very small amount of several highly flavorful foods, very restrictive in calories due to the small amount you ate. One of the choices was 1/4 of an avocado. I had never had fresh avocado. I only had eaten guacomole, and don't care for it much. I cut 1/4 of the avocado and ate it. I then threw the rest in the garbage. I don't like avocado.

What?! I love, love, love, and did I say love..Avacodos! I am so sorry you do not like Avacodos. But, having said that, bet you are not sorry at all.

I was actually sorta surprised, I am not a picky eater. I used to tell my mom that the only things I didn't like to eat were onions and tomatoes. I have since grown to love tomatoes and cooked onions. I still don't like raw onions. I guess there are still only two things that I don't like - onions and avocado. Oh, and liver

Growing up I knew a lot of people who didn't like tomatoes. After asking them why, the main reason was the they thought they had no flavor. Give them a vine ripened tomato and the response was usually along the lines of "I've never tasted a tomato like that, it tastes great!"

I am with you on the avocado and liver though.

When I was a kid I hated every kind of food that began with an A, except apples. No kid should eat artichokes, anchovies, avocados..... And then my taste buds grew up, as did my appreciation for fine cooking. Now "A" is for adventure.... I like to order things off the menu not tried before as most other stuff I can make at home. But I stop at the just plain icky, like Balut.

Superchemicalgirl Bama can put the 12 step program for keeping out of BYC jail next to

his prequel "12step program for getting out of BYC Jail."

Just between us - sssh, whisper
I have to say I am getting to like that Bama character (new & improved) more and more every day. ssssh don't tell him or his probably, pistol packing mama(wife). You know how fragile I am.

Its an acquired taste... My first one was in Las Vegas when I was about eight. Mom and Dad were native Californians. Its important to have a ripe avocado for first timers. Avocado is bland and very pasty even a very good ripe one. It has to be seasoned well. Salt is a key contributor for flavor enhancement.

Not trying to convince just essplain.

Yep there is not a food I wont try over.... Just to be sure it really wasnt something I wanted to eat. Liver was one of those foods. Mom hated liver but dad did. So she would get it and fry it till it was black on both sides. I used to cut it into pill sizes and swallow the bits with a dip of milk.... OH MY GAWD aweful. She made it about three times before I was a teen.

So fast forward to my early twenties. I had a friend whos dad cooked liver on the barbeque... Yep on the barbeque.... She talked about it in glowing terms about how it was the best thing in the world. I never got to taste it but I learned that cooking it well was the key.

Then I started working with WEight Watchers at a time where you could have two sliced of bread but not together to make a sandwich. And it was a requirement to have one liver meal per week.... Vitamins. Oh gawd... Then i discovered Pappy Parkers Fried Chicken... And Chicken livers were on the menue. Me Likey Me likey alot.... Seasoned and breaded lightly and fried in bacon grease or lard... Hardly Weight Watcher fare.... but it was Liver.

So in order to make it legal it couldn't be breaded or deep fried... I bought some and tried my hand using my two teaspoons daily allowance of oil. I was hooked. Savory Salty peppery and very mild. Because I cooked them till they were just done, not dead.

Since then I have learned how to cook beef liver as well.

Same goes for Cilantro. My first taste in salsa and I thought someone had poured a little soap in the mix.... whew... Now I love it. Key with Cilantro is a sharp knife to cut it rather than bruise it.

There are a few veggies that I don't like cooked. Green Bell Pepper, Cauliflower, and Celery. I like them fine fresh. And can tolerate them if they are cooked well not ... dead.

So now I experiment try new things just about once per week.

I couldn't eat balut but I wouldnt mind trying those century eggs that are preserved and come out black. I would also like to try salt preserved eggs.

If I like the salt preserved eggs I might give the process a try.
