Get a fan one of those oscillating kind and set it up in your bedroom... They do Wonders. And if you can bear it pop the windows open... Getting the hot air out of the room with natural heat exchange will help immensely.

If its humid a mister wont do anything but make it more humid and miserable I am afraid.

Ocillating fan open windows (with screens shut of course)

Oh, you chatty people.
Went to the computer this morning and over 20 pages behind.
Here you can only get a decent burger at a proper restaurant, but then you pay 10-12 euros for it. I don't think the McDonalds burgers are that bad either though. Sure, eating a lot of them is unhealthy, but a few times a year isn't that bad.

How large is a big mac in the states? Here it's about 4 inches in diameter.
I think the food in a McDonalds is pretty much identical anywhere in the world.

That's part of their secret. Almost anyone can make a tastier burger. They make an acceptable burger that is reliably the same no matter where you go.
The other part of their secret is that they own some of the most valuable real estate anywhere. Look where they're located, at busy intersections, interstate exits and in popular shopping center parking lots. They also have some unique ones. There's a riverboat McDonalds on the St. Louis riverfront moored along with some historic boats.

Has anyone actually tasted a difference between feedlot cattle fed GMO corn versus non-GMO corn?

lets not get into a debate about whether GMO is going to cause the end of the world, Please only comment on experiences withquality, taste and texture.
I don't imagine there would be a taste difference between feedlot cattle fed GMO corn versus non-GMO corn, But in the US, all the feedlot cattle are eating GMO corn. At least the largest percentage of it.

The real taste difference would be between corn finished and grass fed/finished beef.

I agree on the local food. In my opinion, the best part of travelling is the food.
So true. That's a big part of the adventure. That said, I have been pleasantly surprised though by the unexpected. We were staying in a Mayan hut on the beach in the Yucatan. We went inland to a small village and found an Italian restaurant. It was just a covered patio in front of a house. The Mayan owner travelled to Texas and brought back a pizza oven. He set it up in his living room. We sampled several types of pasta as well as the pizza. Amazingly it rivaled some of the best restaurants on Dago Hill in south St. Louis.

I grew up on pasture fattened Angus long before those short legged cattle were trendy

Its been many many years since I had a steak that tastes like it should
So did I. Our farm and one about 10 miles away were the only ones around that only raised Angus. Almost everyone else had Herefords. There was a Shorthorn farm and another with Charolais. The latter were very new and trendy.

Picture did not load.
One word for beef.
CHAROLAIS.

One word for edible poultry.
BRESSE.

One word for eggs.
ORPINGTON.
The beef (pun intended) with Charolais was that they didn't finish like other beef breeds. The farmers couldn't fatten them as they just seemed to keep growing rather than fatten at 18 months.

Poultry meat, agreed with Bresse along with Black Penedesenca.

Eggs. Eggs from any bird with a good diet. Fermented organic feed, succulent tender greens, fruits and berries and lots of bugs.

... the ALABAMA!! thread (my home state's) was sporadic, and it was, back then. ...
The Missouri thread comes and goes. Probably only a page a week at most.

So what breeds of chickens do u have, if u dont mind me asking? I have 6 brahma pullets, 2 brahma cockerels, 1splash isbar, 1 crested cream legbar, 1 black copper marans, 1wheaten marans, 1 blue isbar, 1 blue marans, and my wife has 2 silkies and 2 polish. Welcome to the old folks home

I see you credit the poofy headed birds to your wife.
I only have Penedesencas and a single Ameraucana now. Over the years, I've had about 30 breeds.

Y'all I am sooooo excited I just got home abt. 3:30 made a 9 hr. round trip to N. Alabama to pick up my Buckeye and I am so happy they are so beautiful! And Mr. McCary was such a wonderful man and showed us so much about them he has a lovely farm. Here is a pic of my new birds. They are 4 months old but they are so much more solid than any of the birds I have held before I was just amazed at the size of the birds on his farm!
Nice. I almost got some Buckeyes from a lady on the West side of the state that developed a nice line but then found Black Penes.

I have traveled a lot over the years and quite often the best part of the trip was the food. I always try the local specialties. I can stay home and sleep in a chain motel and eat at a chain Steak House.
Amen.
I feel the same way about all inclusives in resort cities, like Cancun or Montego Bay. I can stay home if I want to be amidst a bunch of drunk Americans.

It is the same here. The best beef comes from the local markets. I don't understand the current trend of advertising Angus beef. Most of the feeders I see are black baldies which are half Angus and half Hereford. I wonder what the requirements are for labeling beef as Angus beef. Most likely 50% why don't they call it Hereford beef if they must specify a breed.
The reason for the fame of Angus is that the fat marbles with the lean more than other breeds making it juicier and more flavorful.

Also, Angus calves are smaller at birth making calving easier. A neighbor's Hereford bull got into our pasture once. We had a heifer that died calving from that pairing. We weren't at the farm at the time and she went off into the woods, tried to calve, it got stuck and they both died.

Perchie, this thread has been attracting quite a few "others" recently that make it difficult to come to the site. Bamadue was so nice to point out one day that block member works very well. I have to agree with him. When I suspect that someone wanders onto this thread accidentally and just wants to make their own trouble, I block them and their comments no longer show up in the thread for me. Works wonders on my BP and my ability to enjoy this site. Ignore the trolls long enough and they go away.
There's someone on the GMO vs. Organics thread that seems to be just plain angry.

I am making spaghetti for dinner tonight... Without Tomato sauce... we were out.
...

I personally am not in the mood for tomato.... I want just a butter sauce with a few capers and one or two anchovies... easy to do in a small skillet.

deb
Spaghetti with butter and anchovies. MMMM

Other goodies
Angel hair pasta with olive oil and veggies like asparagus tips, summer squash, artichoke hearts, hearts of palm and mushrooms.
Linguini and clams.
Lots of garlic with everything.

...
Oh and years ago I dated a guy whos momma was Italian second generation. She taught me the basics... Fresh and simple is best. Olive oil to saute the sauce lots of garlic but dont burn it.

Her best linguini with clams was pasta clams from a can and olive oil And garlic of course...

I see we're of the same mind.

I NEED MY SPOUSE TO BE BODY SNATCHED AND REPLACED WITH A POULTRY LOVING (or more tolerant) version!!!!
(I need at least one more coop)
I feel your pain. I'm in the same boat - er - canoe.

Bahahaha I know the feeling. DD told me today that the chicken coop area looked like Fred Samsons. I hold her that I'll get it picked up tomorrow. The only trouble is I have a lot of bags of compost and and pots sitting around waiting for my container garden. I can only do so much each day and today was way busy. My problem is the house sits sideways and the back yard is open to the road. I've really got to get busy.
I'm there too. I've been working hard at it but ever since my apprentice totaled his car, I've been a bit overwhelmed. Hopefully I can get it cleaned up before the leaves fall and it's visible from off the property.

Well I did it!

My middle DD helped me--Ask @ChickenCanoe how easy it is to work with Penedesencas. I used valbazen and they will not eat treated bread crumbs from my hand--they will not eat anything from my hand. They also did not want me to pick them up. One of them was protecting the others and pecked me! I used a syringe and a feeding tube.

It was very cute and while I had them upside down, I dusted them with poultry dust.

At least the rest of the pens will be easier. I am going to get one pen tomorrow and then wait until after the second treatment to worm the last group.
10 more days to NPIP testing. The only plus side to having mink destroy 5 flocks of chickens. I really don't know how I was going to be able to catch them all. I only need to catch 14 birds now.

Ok, have to ask, did you freeze the tomatoes whole..or cut into big pieces? Small? I'm guessing they don't take long to thaw out, or maybe that isn't necessary if they are being put into a blender. I like my own salsa.
I try to grow tomatillos every year for a green salsa.

but....uh..... an outhouse isn't air tight (wouldn't want it to be) so the damp creeps in and a bunch of spiders and what not. Just eeeeew.

I have used lots of outhouses, the best ones have the paper all locked up tight. No one want spiders on their behind.

...
Oh don't you know it. I really don't like camping or going to park outhouses in summer. Give me winter and early spring when they're all dormant.

Oz, ever meet anyone who is delighted to get stung, bitten or chewed on by the creepy crawlies?
I'm not sure delighted is the proper term.

You could start another for those above the Arctic circle.

Temps are from a low of 63 to a high of 102 today.
You're so lucky. When it's 102 during the day here, it doesn't get below 80 at night and that's not until 6 AM. It will still be 90 at 10 PM.

I will run the mister system today. It really helps.
...
Would love that option. Humidity ranges from 65-99 almost all summer.

Its been hovering around a hundred here during the day. ranging from about ninety on up.

The breeds that are successful up at my place (wily enough to forage) are Game mutts... desert raised: I tried Wellsummers and they did quite well up there with good protection but they couldn't get away from the coyotes when they got in... the poultry yard.
The only bird I've lost to heat was a Welsummer.

Small combs are fine... We do get cold enough to freeze combs. My Wellie Roos lost at least three points each their first winter.

Sumatras are surprisingly adaptable. Even thought they originate in the Islands of Sumatra There is a fellow here on BYC that has them in New Jersey. He rescued a whole flock that had gone feral. They had invaded his small town and the town council had decided to hunt them down and kill them. He got permission and swoooped in and caught them all and relocated them to his farm which is about sixty acres.

Those guys were living and foraging in a very cold winter climate. Roosting in trees for protection at night. They had newly hatched chicks out and scratching in the yard with snow on the ground. But What me impressed is when he brought them in he never tried to breed them to any kind of SOP. So they remained as Sumatras should be.... Semi Feral. Incredible fliers and foragers and breeding super chicks that are super hearty.

deb

The best breed I've had out of over 30 breedsfor both heat and cold was the Norwegian Jaerhon. Small tight feathered bird.

SCG 80s are a bit much for me too. Over that I really suffer.

I been known to make shorts while still wearing the sacrificial pants.... Actually in extreme heat its best if you stay clothed. Loose cotton preferrably to allow your own sweat to do the job. But keeping clothed keeps you from dehydrating too fast.

deb
I learned that the hard way when I was young and we were putting up hay. Spent the day throwing bales. It was so hot I took my shirt off. Bad idea. Every bit of chaff stuck to my body and then it was too late to put it back on.

Guess I shouldn't have baked bread or (right now) use the iron.

It is too hot/humid to sleep. Maybe someone could put a mister on for me?

Climate change may be worse for you people in colder climates. Most houses don't have AC.

being able to use the misters is a great plus of low humidity. I have used fans too but this year only the misters and shade.

Nope we don't have air conditioning. We do have a portable floor unit for our bedroom that we put away last week

I think it's almost time to strip down and lay on the concrete basement floor.

At least with climate change maybe our winters won't last 6 months?

Now is the time to do cold salads and use the crock pot. Before Mama died she had the A/C set on 89 so it wouldn't come on. We could not cook at all. I just about expired from the heat. I finally talked her down to 85 so I could have a quality of life in the humidity. This is when I first moved in with her after Daddy died. I also had a come to Jesus talk about getting DISH instead of a few cable channels.

My mother was a pistol. People talk about their mother with such love and compassion but honestly, my mom was the most disliked person I know. She loved me and Daddy and that was all. One of her sayings was "My way or the highway" All of my kids chose the highway and could hardly stand to be in her presence, but I loved her and stayed with her so she could die at home. sigh good times.

Such a good kid you were. My dad comes up in the winter, hands me $20 and then turns the heat up. That works, too.

I got another (much smaller) bag done in this heat.

And now I'm going to go attempt to walk on the treadmill for an hour. If I'm going to sweat like this I might as well burn some calories doing it, too.

I'm not sure what it is outside but it's over 40% in my room. I take the top off the incubator for 2 hrs is cool down from day 8 to 18 ( or should it be 17?) and my incubator is around 28 and after it's been off for 2 hrs. it's in the 40's. Hot muggy.

Yes, until lockdown. I often lock them down on day 19.

My mom was one of the strongest women I've ever known, a 4'11" Irish ball of nitro. She definitely ran our household. My dad was totally whipped and totally smitten. She wasn't affectionate at all. No hugging or I love you. She was also the disciplinarian. I swear that woman could throw a flip flop around corners. I once told her that under the Geneva convention making me go out and pick my own switch could be considered torture. She gave me a choice...switch or no library for a month. I took the switch. I think I was about 7. I did deserve every punishment I received, though. My mouth always got me into trouble.
