The Old Folks Home

I really dont care overly about the egg color I just want them to be delicious lol no I'm not looking for anything show quality, just a lil backyard flock that gives me eggs and will fill my familys bellys with meat, and on the vanity side I would like visually appealing chickens :) but hey I wouldnt be mad at a ugly brown hen who gave me lotsa eggs and was a plump juicy meal :) so far have java/salmon faverollie/barred rock crosses, and wyndotte/americana/maybe polish crosses
I was talking about show quality because they are usually not good egg layers.

Golden comets cannot be beaten as brown egg layers and they are very calm and docile. Leghorns are much more energetic so they are often a hand full to deal with.

Both of them will burn out quickly after two years as egg layers.

Another thing to consider is the ability to lay egg with low hours of daylight. If you are not going to add light in the winter, leghorns are not a good choice. If you want eggs all year long without light, add a mixture of rocks and golden comets.

Note: research winter layers and substitute whichever breed for each type. Hatchery is where you want to get production egg layers. Good meat producers are from there too if you want to raise hybrid meat birds too.

Here they are Ron, they are rubber maid tote lids they pop out and I dump them in the compost.

That is my personal experience so not a chart or scientific.
ohh I didnt even think of that! I will have to check with my feed store see what hatchery they use , we get very limited types here I should beable to get the wyndottee, astrolorp and orpingtons from them I want will investigate the hatchery name, if I do the brahmas I will have to hunt them down somewhere might be a few hour road trip, I was speaking to a breeder who is probly few hours away umm called fowling around or something

Don't know why I thought you just hatched and then sold the chicks. Didn't realize you were in on the breeding, too.

Sorry about the inlaws... we'll all be suffering, soon (Thanksgiving).

I am stealth breeding Pita Pintas, Partridge Penedesencas and Arkansas blues. I have shipped some hatching eggs this year too. This will be my second year hatching from my own flock.

These are mine:

Thanks for posting!

I need to do set this up for my big coop.

Ron, what are those in the second and fourth pic? They look exactly like Viiru, our Alho landrace did.

Those are partridge Penedesenca pullets. They are very rare world wide and hard to find in the quality that these are. The parents are form My fly babies. I may get more eggs from them to hatch this year too.

They lay very dark brown eggs.

The chicks hatched from these PP eggs. I really love the rose colored ones that one of the hens lays.

For what its worth the hatcheries will send you chicks in the mail.... Minimum orders do apply but they will sell you whaat ever you want.
Also this time of year there will be very few chicks available till spring. The chicks come to the post office and you have to go get them... I orderd Guinea Keets one time a whole box full.... they packed a few extras and when I counted I had 45.....

came from a breeder in Northern California.... she zip tied Watermellon slices to the inside of the box.... Those Keets were stuffed and poopin watermellon poops. didnt lose a one.

Remember each chicken even though it may be a low producer will lay at least an egg every other day... Some will lay an egg a day. So you will get an egg a day with a day break.....

I had four EEs and that translated to Three to four eggs a day. Every day in a week thats 25 or so eggs.

I was overrun completely after my hens started laying within a week.... there were only two people who ate eggs in the family at the time.... then i was left with one egg eater and that was mee.
