Actually the tropical storm was pretty nasty

53 people died. Drownings, mudslides and electrocution

It was slow moving and barely just below a typhoon- but dumped 2 inches of rain an hour for 12 hours. the winds were 45mph with gusts to 60.

we had to drive through more than 2 miles with water 6-8 inches deep on the roads to get to the airport. We got out before the peak water.

Ok, you win with the hard part of weather...good grief. That is sad.

I'm sitting here, waiting for the vet to come for a colicing horse. Great way to start the new year.

Quote: No, I've heard the walking is really just if the horse keeps trying to roll. This gal has been been lying around, looking sorry for herself, but not really rolling. She seemed kind of depressed - more like a donkey colic. Horses usually go in for more drama.

The obvious answer is a tummy full of dry hay, and not drinking enough water (in cold weather; horses will do that to themselves), but the vet thinks there may be more going on than just a colic. Once we got her up, the horse was showing signs of stiffness and muscle spasms. She was given some Banamine and fluids, but they are doing some blood work to see what else might be going on. Prayers and good thoughts are appreciated.

Cold weather not drinking is a big one.... Keepin my fingers crossed.

I was told not to walk too... I am sixty miles from the vet.... she met me half way with two tubes of banamine and two of Bute... One banamine for the horse the extra and the bute was for my medical chest. At two thousand pounds she got half the tube of banamine and half reserved for if she needed more.

I was told to let her lay down too as long as she didnt thrasth.... Gawd this new treatement for Colic scared me but I follwed her instructions.... Katee relaxed a bit with the banamine then she went to her soft lay down spot and layed down carfully... then she rolled once with a twist of her hind feet and RIPPPED a huge fart.... Whew she layed down and looked much much more comfortable.

For what its worth Banamine is also used to bring temperatures down and is tolerated much more than Bute.

Also for those who dont know horses Colic is a big killer of horses.... they cant throw up and because of the way their intestines are build once they get rigid with pain they can flop over in their hanging supports and cause gangeene.

Sorry Bunny I didnt imply anything just essplainin.

@Bunnylady how's your horse?
The vet called, and said that the blood work came in within normal parameters. The horse continued to lie around for a couple more hours, but right now she is up and scarfing the ryegrass in the back yard. Normally we try to be really careful with the feed intake after a colic, but there really isn't much to rye (mostly water, which is what she needs anyway!). At the moment, she looks 100% normal. Thank the Lord!

@perchie.girl No probs. Anyone who has been around horses and horse people much knows the risks. I know people who have lost horses to colic; I feed beet pulp and alfalfa cubes partly because I can soak them, and be sure that at least some water goes into the horse . . . .

So happy to hear that she is doing better! Boy, the meds today, so grateful for the knowledge today too on animals. Helps to have a vet that knows his/her stuff.
