Hi Diva! I've never had one quit on me but then I always buy a good brand name. Either Nesco or CrockPot. I have a really small one or two? quart, a 4 qt, a 6 qt and my big Nesco for sure and I probably have others as well. Best place to just do a bit of research would probably be Amazon and Walmart online. Most places have that stuff on sale right now. Walmart site to store is really nice and I use that often.
As for pressure cookers, they always scared me too but they have new ones out now that are completely re-worked and much safer. Just too expensive for the use I would give one.

I once had a small cooker that my dog won at a show. It was pottery(I guess you call it) and only had low and high. My mom used it for years to make beans. But, it never seemed to get very warm. She basically used a pressure cooker but, had a few mishaps with it not being sealed correctly before using. That scared the daylights out of me and my older sister.
My sister, the brave, started using pressure cookers after she got married. I am still afraid of them, even just seeing the picture on the box, at Walmart. No way.


I have researched many times for slow cookers and find too much conflicting info. I just need a small one for maybe 2-3 servings - otherwise I will eat myself to death with leftovers.
Reading comments on line - it seemed like many said if a slow cooker worked for a year, it was a miracle. Some said theirs started to fail much earlier. There aren't many small ones on the market. I am the nervous type that would not have them cooking over night or when I am not home. I would use when I am home all day and keep an eye on it. I would love to attempt things like pulled pork, or pulled chicken etc.

Any suggestions? The only small I found was one that basically kept your lunch( 1 serving) warm - too small.

The new pressure cookers are safe. The fixed the problems that to old ones had.

I am making pulled pork in a slow cooker today. It is digital so you set it for the hours to cook and then it goes into warm up mode.

really? no more freaking out when it was time to take the lid off? I used to hide when mom used hers.

No problem!

With the fagor, there is a lock so it cannot open until the pressure is gone.

tntchix - surprised we never met under the chair

on pressure cooker days. Of course I am much older then you. You probably weren't born when I was hiding. I'm too fluffy(yah, that's it) to fit under a chair now. I remember when my mother took the top off and steam & stuff shot up to the ceiling. I guess my mom was pretty brave or ditzy because none of that ever scared her.

She used to broil steak for my dad and managed flames that scorched our HIGH kitchen cabinets. This happened three times in one month - the firemen always told her to spread salt and close the broiler so no air would feed the flames. IS it any wonder I have never broiled anything and never will. The last time, she told me to get grandma out of the house - it was freezing outside and grandma didn't want to go. Once I got out there, I worried that my mom stayed inside & our Java rice bird Muffy. That was another of the minor things that helped shape my personality. I won't even go into the major stuff.

My son has a fancy schmancy big name expensive one - because he loves gadgets. It has a zillion touch buttons and settings and he only used it a few times and the last time it didn't get warm at all. But, you know young people they just dump stuff if it gives them any problem.

OH GOOD GRIEF!!!!

Just caught our latest weather report. Snow thru tomorrow, ok, no big deal there. However (why is there always a "however"?) then the temps take a serious nose dive Sunday night With it not getting above zero on Monday and by Monday night we should hit -30 F (or worse) with -40 F+ windchills. Ok, this isn't unheard of for us but we normally don't get this until around Valentine's Day and it only lasts for a day or two. Once this stretch kicks in we're not supposed to see daytime temps above zero till Friday. Good thing for the girls I'm mobile again. Tomorrow I need to throw some extra straw in the coop, change the woodchips on the catch board and drag out the heated waterer to put into the coop. Don't worry girls!!! You may not remember me but chickie momma won't forget you!!!

mine are good quality but I skip the fancy shmansy part. Never figured I needed an automated slow cooker. Huh?
If you aren't going to be there, you just slllloooowww it down some more

Maybe that's why I've never had a problem with any of mine. Might also have to do with buying Nesco, American made.
