When my mom cooked (not cooking wasn't her thing) you ate it or else, she came from a family of 14 with 3 older brothers so food was scarce. You don't dare not eat everything on your plate when she's around, even now.

In my recent comments, I talked about the deaths from tropical storm "Seniang" that passed over us. Most of those deaths were from other islands but we had some tragedy very close to home.
A barangay (village) from up in the mountains came down to the beach in sugar cane trucks to celebrate the New Year on Jan 2 on our beach, at the day resort next door. The storm had passed but the seas were still very rough, with the surf running up the beach to within 6 feet of our fence.
Four young children were playing on the beach near a chanel that takes the water out between sand bars and were swept out to sea. So far two bodies have been recovered. It took 48 hours for the oceans to be calm enough for small boats to go out and look for the remainding two childrens' corpses. This morning there are 60+ boats combing the bay.
Its devastating for the families. I cannot imagine losing one of my precous children.
Our children heard the news when they arrived at the beach house on the 3rd. Both had nightmares all night. My nightmares included my kids discovering a body. They are off the beach until further notice.

aw sorry. some of us are like that. I don't like to cook, and no one wants what I do make, so sometimes mom just takes the night off or I just plain forget and they do what we call "fend" but there is always food in the house if they want it.I was an only child of an only child.... sometimes mom just forgot to cook. Or she burned it so bad there was no nutritional value in it at all. I remember fish that had been cooked so long it was translucent and you couldnt get it out of the pan you had to scoop it out. One year we had hot dogs for dinner almost every night.... This was before microwaves and tv Dinners... Or if you got a TV dinner they had to be cooked in the oven....
Dad and I would sometimes have crushed soda crackers in a glass with milk poured over the top because we were still hungry after dinner. He was the one that taught me the peanut butter trick.

We call it foraging.... either a can of chile or left overs nuked... or a bunch of veggies. Mom was depressed and I inherited that... but I do fix meals and try to have them nutritious and edible. My son will eat just about anything mexican... I have a big bag of tamales in the freezer.,... easy to fix just take a frozen one wrap it in a paper towel and nuke for four minutes.
