The Old Folks Home

Perchie, looks like farm style tap dancing....... I'm fascinated - people moving hands AND feet at the same time. Slow dancing is the best I can do and still trample my partners feet. Not my fault, it's Alaskans.

Of course it is. Growing up in the late '60's and 70's I'm gonna say NO to the country music and clogging. Sorry Deb, threedognight is the only way to go. Back in the day. ha.

Hello all, it's been super busy and I'm over 1000 posts behind. And it will continue to be so for the next little while, so I'll check in when I can and go back 15 pages and try to keep up. Love this thread but it's sooooo fast.

I've been gearing up to getting my egg business going and starting my mini co-op in my area. Starting out with 40 ISA Brown pullets coming on the 5th of next month. I bought a bunch of waterers and feeders at rock bottom prices. Google sears.com and search for poultry waterers and feeders. Ordered blueberry bushes and getting all my stock and supplies for the garden beds. Of course, I'll be hiring help to get my straw bale gardens and A frame trellises for the peas and beans. I'm really loving life right now.. Of course I'm broke and it is the 5th of the month. But enough to get me threw to when I can finish the roofing on the second coop.

I went on lockdown today on my 8 Basques and 3 Lemon Cukoo Orphingtons. Hope to have great results. Doing everything right this time, so maybe.....

Beer Can, glad you mentioned bluegrass festivals...I got dragged to many by my dad. I guess I'm the only one old enough, or far enough south to remember being dragged to the all night sings too, by my grandmother. Southern Gospel all night long. Good memories!

Welcome to the lurkers, and newbies!

Yes, short women are scary. I was raised by one, and she was the tallest in her family, so all my aunts on her side were scary too. They don't like being called runts either. One of the times my mother was mad about something, and I reached out, patted her on the head, and said "there there little mama", then ran for my life. LOL! All of my daughters took after my mother's side. They're almost 5 foot tall, cute, and sweet, unless you get them mad, then watch out!

I could never be a full time vegetarian. I love most fruits, and vegetables, but I've just got to have meat sometimes too.

Try Russian kale it's incredible I couldn't pick enough of it... I just pick off the leave and poof they would be back after a few days. I grew like maybe 8 ft.² and it was my most productive and lucrative crop... Personally I wouldn't freeze it for my chickens because it ends up slimy but I bet you could dry it and add it to their feed, it would work really well dried added to FF. This year I want to find some black kale it looks similar to the Russian but darker and richer... And some of that Romanesco Collie flower that would be neat.
Good to know. I'll get some and try it in the garden. Hows the fermented feeder going? Have you shut it down for the winter? It' got to 28 last night in La and the water froze. Imagine. Still making and feeding ff. I'm just blessed that I'm so far south. Of course my Cobb 500 rescue hens that were in the 2nd coop were not happy with their lake. The coop is on a sloop and I didn't have funds until the 3rd. Got it set up to have the handyman bring a boatload of bags of soil and it started raining before he could do so. It rained almost 5" in 2 days. They think they are ducks. However, I had a fellow come over and take them off my hands to get rid of the aggravation. Made a tiny amount of money on each and now can take my time finishing up the coop. Soooooo until my eggs hatch in 3 days I'm down to 10. Wow. I can't remember that far back.

Hi Linda.
Yeah I'm still using my feeders it's a labor of love in the winter or a labor of insanity however you want to see it... They work Pretty well until under -10°C... but it's been colder than that lately so for the most part I've been feeding them in trays. I'm not, I can't give up on the FF they love it. My flock expanded (okay, more than doubled) and I am selling eggs also, and their ( if I'd stop dropping eggs) paying for their own feed.
Feeders still need some work... somethings up and I'm trying to figure out how to stop it from leaking so you don't have to add water to keep the feed moving... I will figure it out.

That's great, now I can live vicariously through you and not refill my incubator

Let's hope it continues. Some eggs appeared to be further along than others. I've been moving them around in there but I guess not enough.

It's also only been 98.X in there the last 24 hours on the bottom. I upped the temp tonight a wee bit, and it stabilized back around 99.X but I have to watch it for another hour or so to be sure.

I love mushrooms, even raw dipped in ranch dressing, fried in butter is my fav. @vehve Have you tried them huge portabellas on the grill? I like to do a short marinade on the huge big ones and grill them whole over a smokey wood fire, mmm good, just like steak.
Here we marinade with Italian dressing, grill the frilly side, flip and fill the cap with crumbled bleu cheese and bacon while the rounded side grills. Serve on a bun... Juicy yumness!

Would you believe, there are actually people on this thread that eat mushrooms even! That's just sick.
The world is full of happy folks that love and crave mushrooms. Obviously you don't want to be a fun guy. (need to say that aloud)

I find that small women are exceptionally scary

Hey! I resemble that comment!

Actually, most of the time I'm not scary; I'm invisible.

@Peep_Show Yeah Italian dressing makes a great marinade for them. The first time I tried grilling them I didn't put anything on them, not to good. They have to be wet to take the heat in and cook right. Going to have to try them like you said with bacon and blue cheese next time. I do like them grilled on a wood fire grill though.
