The Old Folks Home

I love meat, bloody steak, greasy porkchops, etc. But I love my veggies just as much, they are the first thing I eat, like dessert. Last couple summers I've been doing a fine chop on dandalion greens fresh from the lawn and mixing them in salad. Super good for you. A little bitter but most homegrown lettuce is on the bitter side anyway. New fav, steamed kale, just tried it not to long ago. We always have swiss chard and spinich in the garden, now I'm adding kale, and lots of it so I can freeze some for the chickens in the winter.

Try Russian kale it's incredible I couldn't pick enough of it... I just pick off the leave and poof they would be back after a few days. I grew like maybe 8 ft.² and it was my most productive and lucrative crop... Personally I wouldn't freeze it for my chickens because it ends up slimy but I bet you could dry it and add it to their feed, it would work really well dried added to FF. This year I want to find some black kale it looks similar to the Russian but darker and richer... And some of that Romanesco Collie flower that would be neat.

I'll just freeze xtra spinich and swiss chard for the chickens then. We grew tons of swiss chard and froze lots of it. It gets tough after freezing?? Went great added to soups (without the stalks)though. Will try russian kale. Haven't tried kale chips yet but I hear they are good.

I have a pond full of duck weed and heard its high in protien, so I added it to their feed with lots of free cottage cheese and ground up whole fish the kids caught. Those extra roos grew pretty good, not as fast as frankenchickens but I didn't spend much on feed.

I like the username Beer can. For a minute I thought bamadude changed his username and moved to NY.

Thanks, I got it from my favorite way to grill a chicken. I get the biggest one and do it beer can style on the grill, except I put a cake pan under it loaded with potatoes carrots and onion and a little water. The juices from the cooking chicken soak into the roasted vegis mmm good. Better than any store bought rotiseree chicken.

I am somewhere in the middle 45 to be exact but I feel 25 most days others end up being 85...... What's all this talk of mushrooms. My wife loves them. I however would much rather eat meat and fresh veggies and leave the fungus alone!!!!!!

Oh neat... Maybe I'll try that (spinach and Swiss chard) if that's working for you the kale would probably freeze just fine for however your using it... How are you using it for the birds?
Kale freezes really well if you're going to be cooking with it.

Spinach freezes really well, just blanch it first, same with the chard, but for some reason it gets tough. I just thaw it out and give it to them. That way they get some greens and vitamins in the winter when everything is dead. Not sure how kale freezes, I know I had some freeze in the bottom of our fridge and it did turn yucky slimmy. But it wasn't blanched of course that might be why you blanch spinach??
