The Old Folks Home

I have to admit, at that point the cost of care, both directly and indirectly through time spent, is pretty high for a 200$ bird... more like a 2200$ bird. Don't know if I would be up for that myself. But very nice to hear the bird is doing better.

I have a friend that was too lazy to break a turkey hen of broodiness and eventually after multiple vet visits, tube feeding and physical therapy, it died. $2000 later.

True, but many vets, including mine, will prescribe it for pet poultry, though even if they didn't, *anyone* can buy it online, Did you know that one can get a liter of generic Baytril without a prescription for $85?

You have no idea how this response spent my mind racing.

This is going to come off a little abrasive to some but I will take that risk.

Maybe you should find another vet.

How many people ave been to the doctor with a respititory tract infection and get prescribed an antibiotic?
All of you?
And in the last five years, have any of you been prescribed drugs like Penicillin, Amoxicillin, Keflex, Bactrim, Erythromycin or Tetracycline?
No?
I thought so.
You were prescribed Mocifloxacin, Azithromycin and Cefdinir - and the doc did not take a throat swab or sputum sample before administering the antibiotic.

Mediocre/lazy doctor. Ill informed patient.

You and your doctor are causing super bugs. You are being overtreated by a physician who either does not have the time or inclination to treat you properly.

If you has true bacterial symptoms, a culture should be taken to both diagnose the correct bacteria, and check to see the sensitivities of that bacteria to various antibiotics.

Your vet is not far from the mediocre/lazy doctor. Ask him why he gave your bird a banned substance when there are other choices.

Now in fairness - docs and vets can be pretty clued in to what the bug of the week is - most of the time.... Once I was sick and given Amoxicillin for a puss flecked productive cough. The doc actually cultured my spit. It was not Strep P. as he thought but Haemophilus Influenzae. B-Lactam antibiotics are not effective against H. Influenzae and I was changed to Keflex.

Ask for a culture and sensitivity whenever a doctoror vet thinks you need an antibiotic.

Why give a banned florquinolone antibiotic when there are so many other choices available?

Many antibiotics are used off label but the FDA and European Bodies have all collaborated and said DO NOT USE THIS ANTIBIOTIC ON CHICKENS BECAUSE ONE DAY WE MAY NEED IT TO SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!

Give something else people.

Case in point. We have endemic Coryza. We vaccinate but occaisionally birds will get missed through an instruction lost in translation, or staff turn over. Enrofloxacin is very effective against Coryza. But so are sulphonamides, tylosin, erythromycin and tetracyclines. My treatment is chlortetracycline in the water. If severe symptoms occur then Tylosine injection. Tylosine is off label in chickens (but not banned).

I am guilty of not getting a culture but I have already established

I stock Enrofloxacin (and Norfloxacin) in my mini pharmacy. I have it on stand by for swine. Its a last resort drug for me. My first line is Agrimycin (Oxytetracycline) 200 or Combi-Pen (Penicillin G Procaine). Second is either Tiamulin or Tylosine. My farm is in a location where it is legal to purchase and administer without a prescription but why go against world thought leaders opinions.

I pay $17 for 100ml of generic Baytril injectable. A kilo of Norfloxicin powder for water is $23 - but I dont stock it.

I'm afraid I am one that will treat with no diagnosis, but I usually have a good reason to. Too often delay in treatment, which should include proper supportive care like heat and fluids, will result in death. Those that are raising poultry for food should probably only medicate as directed to by a and should also have necropsies done on deceased birds.

Most of us treat without advice from vets.

I encourage people to go online and get as much info as they can on the drugs available do they can make informed choices. Social media sites such as BYC and Facebook are not prescibing information sites.

When Pope John Paul came to St. L. my kids went with me to the adult mass. They weren't really old enough (or on the low end) to go to the young people's mass.

They were fairly moved by the experience.

A papal visit is so rare, I can imagine how excited the Filipinos are.
