Well, Mom and I went smelting today.

Went right out on the frozen river (it was very slick)

Ended up in smelt camp 3 which had significantly better accommodations than we anticipated. 2 stools, a wood stove (with the wood delivery sled right outside), worms, a worm cutting board with a razor blade, plus line, bobbers, sinkers and hooks. The employee took us down and showed us what to do and lit our stove for us. An hour later it was about 95 degrees in our little smelt camp.

Over the ice hole there were 12 lines to bait, unwind and drop in.

And then we sat and watched the lines. And jiggled them up and down a bit. And watched the lines...

... for 4 hours until we had had enough sweating and watching. Nothing was biting. According to the employees, the fish were going crazy at 2 am (apparently smelting is a 24 hour sport). Noted for next time Mom visits. Can't wait to get her up at 0100 to go smelting.
Sound like y'all got a great sauna while smelting... How fun!

Oh wow peep we used to go to grunion runs all the time in Calif. they are fun the fish just jump in your bucket to use for bait! I love deep sea fishing!

I have never been smelting but it looks a lot like my mom talked about going ice fishing on the lake in Minnesota.

Thanks Peep for the heads up on Amazon!
And thanks Ron I found other stuff I will need.
