The Old Folks Home

@ChickenCanoe I work about a half hour from Cooperstown. When they had the Hall Of Fame Game we had contractors from out of state at work. They couldn't find a hotel anywhere. I think they had to drive a hour to find one that wasn't full. My Grandfather took me and my cousins when I was ten. I would like to visit it again but I'm going to wait until they induct Pete Rose. I go to Indian Lake in the Adirondacks almost every year with buddies hunting. You would probably like Old Forge, great tourist destination. Lots to do, awesome restaurants, old style train ride, the stores are cool, and we take the kids to Enchanted Forest, a huge waterpark. One year when I was a kid we camped there, our camp was tore up by a 600+lb black bear. (not supposed to leave coolers of food outside, supposed to keep them in your vehicle Lol.)

A holdout and protester on the Pete Rose thing I see.

I think he belongs too but Bud Selig will be dead before that happens.

We're beginning to have to prepare for bears when camping. That's become an issue in the last 20 years.

@Double Kindness Here's a link you should read. Just so that you're prepared. Now, reading this will get you thinking all kind of horrible things, so the most important thing to take from it is that you should be patient. I'm just giving the link to you so that you're prepared. I will say again, that if you think you should help a chick with the hatching, you're probably way too early for that still. But the article goes through the hatching phase pretty well, and gives you a good idea of what to do in case something goes wrong. Odds are it won't, but just so that you know. One more time, be patient, and don't go assisting too early.

And just to show that this can't be stressed enough, don't go assisting too early, you might only be lessening the chick's chances.

Well, Mom and I went smelting today.

Went right out on the frozen river (it was very slick)

Ended up in smelt camp 3 which had significantly better accommodations than we anticipated. 2 stools, a wood stove (with the wood delivery sled right outside), worms, a worm cutting board with a razor blade, plus line, bobbers, sinkers and hooks. The employee took us down and showed us what to do and lit our stove for us. An hour later it was about 95 degrees in our little smelt camp.

Over the ice hole there were 12 lines to bait, unwind and drop in.

And then we sat and watched the lines. And jiggled them up and down a bit. And watched the lines...

... for 4 hours until we had had enough sweating and watching. Nothing was biting. According to the employees, the fish were going crazy at 2 am (apparently smelting is a 24 hour sport). Noted for next time Mom visits. Can't wait to get her up at 0100 to go smelting.

If they would have told me to be there, I would have. I have a much more difficult time with something like 9PM than I do with 2AM.

I was up this morning, no alarm, at 0257.

However, based upon the sheer number of beer cans in the ice, I'd say the overnight shift is a tad more vivaciously obnoxious than the day shift.
