The Old Folks Home

SCG I wish I had turkey eggs to put in the bator. Edith is the blue slate that I was talking about earlier. Still have daughter Lurkey but I was really hoping to have two hens laying this year to hatch out some more. Poor Jake was off the property and about an acre away. I found him but he wanted to come home so he was walking around I think hoping I would shoo him back to the yard. I will get over it but bummed it happened and really bummed because it was my fault for not taking a couple of minutes to just get them all rounded up. Live and learn but I could kick myself for letting it happen.

Well my day just got a little bit brighter. Edith showed back up and not a scratch on her.

I am so relieved that she wasn't hurt and didn't get taken by coyotes before she could find her way home.

I'm feeling old and achy this afternoon. One of my cousins needed help moving and we all gathered to help. The first thing I grabbed, someone else helped me with it, but when we were putting it in the UHaul, I hurt my back and paid for it from then on. I don't mind getting old, it's just the not being able to do stuff that bothers me! LOL

SCG, glad you made it home safely and that your dad is doing better.

DS, glad that Edith made it home safely!

I'm so glad she made it home. I was hoping to get eggs from her, she's pretty.

Don't beat yourself up over mistakes, we all make them. 99% of the time a quick decision like you made wouldn't have been a big deal.

SCG I agree. If I had looked at the gate before I left everything probably would have been fine. I am glad Edith got home fine too. I am looking forwards to hatching some of her eggs too

Welcome back SCG! So glad to hear your dad is doing better. I always get a chuckle at your fun posts. You are a good writer. I feel ya when it comes to those small planes. I have ridden in a few. I do not like them! Have to say though, can't rightly remember having to straddle a seat? Oh dear!

DiDi..glad Edith came home! I would have been blaming a hawk here. We have a coopers that just keeps watching from our neighbors tree. I have to look over there to see if it is sitting at the top of the tree, then if not, I will let them out, but it has to be later morning. That thing flew right over our yard today as I was coming back from the coop. Those little birds are quick. Got one of my neighbors' last year, her beautiful GLW.

SCG I just can't do ducks. They would spend all day in the horse troughs and that would not be good for the horses. Might have an issue with the turkey eggs though. I ran in to town to pick up a few things and left the birds out since it is such a nice day. Should have tried to get them back in the pen. Came home to my dogs running amok (they got one of our gates open some how). Right now I have two Brahma hens I have to put down. Poor Jake is missing a lot of feathers but otherwise unharmed. Edith is missing. I am hoping she will show up or is over visiting the neighbors again and they will let me know if they see her. I don't think she was hurt since I didn't see any of her feathers on the ground but I have no idea where she went to hide. To top all of this off, our car sprung a fuel leak sometime during the short trip to town and back. I think I just need a "do over" for today. It will get better I am sure but right now not feeling too happy. At least it was my dogs and not a neighbor's dog. I think that would have made it worse to have to deal with someone else's dogs wreaking havoc.

I'm home after a special "salon" wine & cheese pairing at Winery by the Creek in Fairplay. I may be TUI (Typing Under the Influence), so please forgive me if I ramble. :p

I don't normally like Charles Mitchell wines, but these were his Reserve selections and they are GOOD. Learned something about wine grapes and whatnot, too. Didn't know Zinfandel and Primativo wines were essentially the same grapes, or that Zinfandel grapes originated in Croatia, not Italy. Or why "fruitier" wines are more likely to be created in Amador County than El Dorado County. Lower Altitude and hotter days... Bigger, sweeter grapes. Not better wines, just different flavors.

Bought two bottles of wine (2009 Hawk Creek Zinfandel and 2009 Charles Mitchell Signature Zinfandel); opened one and shared it with a couple folks on the patio outside the winery afterwards. Gonna use the rest of that bottle in cooking a sirloin roast in the pressure cooker. (I really am not much of a wine drinker... Kind of a shame, but Chocolate intoxicates me better and I can drive after I eat some.) I'm learning, though.

And to think I used to believe Beringer's White Zin or White Merlot were good wines. I also thought I " couldn't " drink red wines because I always got a raging headache from the tannins. Well, really good red wines don't do to me what I used to experience after drinking the few red wines I tried before I moved up here.

However, I do get a bit more tiddly nowadays, because I enjoy what I'm drinking and don't stop after a few polite sips.

Let's see... Happy Chooks, thank you for the information and visual aids regarding your injured cockerel. Poor fella. Makes me feel bad about the few chickens I've discovered with injuries; I need to make euthanasia plans earlier than I have in the past with an injured chicken. I just kept hoping
Segregation, TLC and time would heal "a limp."

Dsqard, SO glad to hear Edith is safe! Back when my eldest doxie turned out to be a chicken killer I was horrified, angry, broken-hearted and felt guilty for being such a bad chicken mom and not a very good dog mom, either. Zorro has since learned to simply ignore the poultry, but it was rough training him. I truly think Carl the rooster and Louie the Cayuga drake taught Zorro more than *I* did.
