We'll be under a winter weather advisory starting tomorrow night and going until late Tuesday night. 6+ inches of snow predicted. I don't care, I'm still starting my tomatoes tonight.

I'll actually play well with others and type in green.

Yes you do. I bet you were a fun neighbor as a kid! Had a lot of friends over didn't you? :D

You are planting your tomatoes? Inside first? We wouldn't dare here just yet. It's so windy here. I'm just down from a canyon, we get the wind. It's nice in the summer, but the winter..ugh. But we are still dipping down below freezing at night, so no plants outside. Just my Tulips that are starting to come up!

I lived out in the boonies. No neighbors. Had to keep myself entertained.

Anyway, yeah, starting the tomatoes inside. Nothing coming up yet, all my bulbs are still frozen along with the dirt. We have a good set up for seed starting:

We start seeds in this insulated box. There's grow lights and heat mats, and I add a fan once the seedlings come up.

When they graduate from the seed box, then they go outdoors in a cold frame during the day, and come in at night:

This makes them big and healthy and ready for transplanting. Our summers are so short, and sometimes really cold, that I need to start things early. We also have a hoop house over a raised bed, but I planted garlic in it last fall, so won't be using it this year for tomatoes, maybe next year.

I use a lot of old kitty litter pails too for growing, I find that is the only way I can get peppers - must be the warmer soil. Looks ghetto, but I live almost at the end of a dead end dirt road, so I don't think anyone cares. Besides, kitty litter pails are tres chic here - very common to see them filled with concrete to hold a mailbox down.

Catching up---Forgot it was St Patty's day!! Spent all day outside cleaning up now the ground is cleared of snow--tomorrow it will be white again with about 6" of prestine white snow!! THen the storm will head to SCG's house.

SCG-- hope your Dad is recovering well now that he is home. I fly if I have to but I pray on take off and landing. Feels like the thing will shake to peices.

DIdi-- glad your girl made it home safely. WHat a releif.

I've been turing over the compost and the hens come running for the odd goodie they can find. Takes twice as long to work around them,

Second batch of speckled sussex arrived yesterday-- so weird the thermometers are running high compared to last year, and yet the chicks are arriving a day late. Bumped up the temp a bit for this next batch. Sold a few chicks today. THese were for me, but I didn't want to disappoint a customer. The money will buy a bag of feed, right?

Happy Patty's Day to All.

Green
No clue how change it to Green but you use your imagination
Crazy day today
Got the babies moved out side yesterday and introduced the big chickens to them. That went pretty well. They loved having room to run around and new grass to eat. Although the babies are still a little suspicious of the big scary outside.
Had dad's memorial today and I restrained from hitting my sister or calling the cops on her.
Got a really cute picture of the girls

Wow..that looks great! You guys have really thought this through. How long are the summers there? I don't think I could stand a long winter and short summer. :/ Good for you for getting a garden going anyway. It's a good thing to know how to do. I will be watching for pictures of your tomatoes this year! Good luck on your seedlings!
