My fine feathered friends . . . despite using a rebuilt PC , my log on time is near to ziltch because the connection gets dropped frequesntly . . not make that      most of the time.

My point-- recommendations for a new PC brand, or feathures?? I have dial up so cant  have everything.

Recommendations:
I highly recommend HP's for computers.
Get rid of the dial up! ;)

As for computer brands, I haven't found a PC manufacturer I really like yet, but macs seem to be pretty trustworthy. I don't like using them myself, but I have friends who still use their 6-7 years old laptops.

Haahaa my old PC lasted about 14 years. THey don't make things like they used to.

Generally the problem with my current PC is that I keep loosing connection. THe cursor gets sluggish and then it is gone. ANd then the connect gets dropped. Oddly, if it is in the cycle of auto redial, the cu5rror comes alive again. Rebooting, as in UNPLUG, helps for a short , short time.

You've got dial up still? Wicked, I don't think I've met a person who's used dial up for the past 10 years or so. Have you done a proper virus scan? The cursor issues might be because it's jam packed with malware. And that will effect other stuff too.

Arielle have you looked into wireless or satellite? We have wireless because we do not have cable (or at least didn't when we built the house) in our area either. It is somewhat pricy although if you are not streaming video you can keep your usage lower and therefore your bill lower. I am sure it is probably more expensive than dial up (I'm with vehve, I haven't known anyone still using dial up in ten years) but it is WAY faster than dial up.

Dialup is too slow to correctly download and install microsoft updates so the computer becomes vulnerable to viruses and etc.

When Karin started doing on site calls, I stocked up her car. She's got a saw, axe, bolt, cutters, couple of shovels, blankets, a space blanket, jumper cables, tow lines, liferaft food and some basic tools plus duct tape and zip ties and probably loads of other stuff I can't remember. The problem is keeping water in the car though, since everything freezes at winter. Of course, in a pinch you can always eat snow. And I should probably check the flashlights in there, haven't used them in a while. One of the most important things though, in my opinion, is keeping a knife in the glove compartment. If you're stuck in the car upside down, you can cut the seat belt, and it can be used to dispatch wounded animals too. Or then you can get one of the seat belt cutters and keep it in the vanity mirror. Many people have them in their cars, but they keep them in the first aid kit in the trunk, what the heck are you going to do with it there? Sure, it's handy if you need to help someone, but you need to get out of the car first to do that.

*Edit* I keep forgetting about the 4 tonne cable puller I keep in there too. And then there's the first aid kit of course too.

That's it, you're in charge of prepping us for next winter! I also will put a knife in there, that's a great idea. I'm surprised BF doesn't make me carry my survival kit.

Next storm due tonight-- and another in a couple days. . . .

I think we have the same order coming. Someone should cancel it.

but I pretty sure Alaska is big enough to see.

Only if it can see Russia, too.

Like someone else said look into satellite. It's not quite as fast as DSL or cable internet but at this point you'll notice a huge difference.
