The Old Folks Home

Humidity has been holding at 64%, but just dropped 1%. Hatching is taking longer than 21 days for me so far :(

The incubator fluctuates from 99.8-100.3f. The humidity this hatch has remained consistant at 64% . The beak is out, it's peeping. Just very slow progress.

The hole started at 2pm mountain time yesterday and is not making a lot of progress. The beak is out.

On other news, I changed the paper towels in the brooder box and an hour later there are over 20 poops on it from 2 little chicks. That's a lotta poop.

Ok I'm freaking out a bit.

I have only hatched 2 chicks so far, and this egg has been pipping for 30 hours + and is only this far

I don't want to intervene, but will it be ok? So new to this.

Do you hear it peeping?

It looks like it is stuck and may need to help.

Why does the incubator fluctuate so much?

The room that the incubator is in needs to hold a constant temperature 24\7. I use a space heater that has a thermostat to even out the highs and lows.

It sounds like the average temperature was low for your hatch which makes the chicks stick. Humidity at hatch will only slow that down but some will still stick.

For your next hatch, we can set up a PM and I will get you tuned up! I have helped several of us get their hatches running better over the years.

Kathy, sorry when I thought you had blackhead in turkeys, rather than your peafowl. I guess the word blackhead triggers thoughts of turkeys. What a sad situation. I hope you will be able to save your peas.

SCG so very sorry for what YOU / BF and the poor chicks had to go through.

After heroic measures I used to save a puppy now and then only to have them seizure at a 6-8 wks.& die because they had some internal major defect.I always had them autopsied because I was convinced it was my fault (sometimes it was) . I asked the vet how come they lived so long and he said because I gave them great care. He made it sound like 'that" was a bad thing. I got out of dogs -eventually , thought I should stop playing god.

No, I wanted a Rin Tin Tin dog when I was a kid BUT my mother thought it would kill us in our sleep. She said I could get a Cocker Spaniel. First two were mean as heck. So I decided I was going to breed ones with good dispositions and I did. But, not on the same level as finding a cure for cancer.

No I do not care for ankle snapper dogs - lady on the corner had 2 tinies (won't mention the very small breed) but, she would let them loose and they would hone in on my during my walks. It was hard to play soccer with them when the owner was watching. She was a nice woman but, a little strange about her dogs. She could see them following and snapping at my heels and never called them off.

So you raised Cocker Spaniels?

They are supposed to be good bird dogs for hunting.
