Live insects, solitary bees and ladybugs and such. Apparently it should aid in pollination and pest control. Plus, they're quite pretty, if built right.

Thanks for the Garlic fungus information. I still able to get Christoper ranch organic garlic. Strangely it says packed buy Christopher Ranch so I wonder it is really from China too?

We used to see a lot of trucks packed with garlic heading up I-5 but I have not seen them in quite some time. California made most fungicides illegal for use on Food, which has caused problems with Strawberries too.

I wonder if it would help to burn the surface of the garlic field to get rid of the fungus in the ground and then plant bulbs that are definitely healthy.

They may be able to use black plastic to sterilize the soil--putting plastic film over the ground to heat the soil.

Wouldn't work here though, doesn't get hot enough. It might work if you dumped a layer of horse manure and something else that will heat up nicely, then wet it down and cover with black plastic. It would need some air holes, but I think that could add to the heat.

I have seen fields fumigated.... they inject the soil with what ever the chemical is then cover it with black plastic weighed down by sand bags.... The plastic stays there for a very long time...

Horse maneur is not a good choice... it has its own chemicals in it from wormer meds to vitimines and arthritis drugs.... Then there is the whole weed thing, The digestive processes in horses tend to allow consumed seeds to germinate faster.
