The Old Folks Home

Welcome back Bama.

We spent yesterday afternoon in the emergency room. Maddy tripped over Daisy and Daisy snapped at her...got her on the face. She's ok but it was close to her eye and throat. Thinking about how close still makes me shaky inside. She didn't need stitches but they do have her on antibiotics. My first reaction was to get rid of the dog, I actually hated her for a few. I know she didn't mean it but it scared me...bad. We did buy a crate and she will be in it when not outside when Mads is in the room. Just wanted to let yall know so if I post any pics of Maddy you won't be upset when you see the wound. She has two punctures in her cheek and one under her chin. CPS is having us quarantine Daisy for awhile, just to be safe. Thankfully she is up to date on her shots.

tnspursfan so sorry you and Maddy are going through that. :( No fun when something like this happens. I had a blue heeler that snapped at a child once (neighbor's child, not mine) but that was enough for me. I really don't think the dog was trying to bite, just an unfortunate accident (one tooth on the child's cheek) but I couldn't trust the dog any more as my children were about the same age and size. I turned the dog over to the vet's office on post. They had a no kill pound. :hugs to you and Maddy.

I hear you. I made my mom stop taking several meds over the years. Just because "my dr told me to take this" isn't good enough reason for me, the benefits have to outweigh the risk, which these days they certainly don't.
I went with my grandmother when she was still alive, must be like five or six years ago now... but anyway, I went with her to see her personally assigned nurse, with whom we went through all of her medications and how they react together. She then consulted the doctors who had prescribed the different medications, and dropped away the ones that were no longer considered necessary, some dosages were checked, and some meds were switched to others. To my understanding, this is something they try to do with most elderly people, there is still so much medication that is taken unnecessarily, and some people might even be on contradicting medications. I think it's a really good idea.

tnspurs, nice to hear Maddie is okay, and I hope she wasn't too shaken by that. Sounds to me like the dog was probably startled and just reacted on instinct before realizing what it was doing. Not very uncommon, and I wouldn't say it's a sign of aggression, just a normal response. Kids can be difficult for dogs sometimes, since they tend to move erratically. Especially older dogs that might be losing their eyesight or hearing can snap in situations like that when they are surprised from behind. Most dogs I've seen do it have just done the one bite, with no follow through. Sort of like blinking when someone claps in fort of your face, it's just instinct based reaction.

She is a 13 year old Great Dane. I'm sure she didn't mean to do it, she adores Maddy. But being so big it could have been so much worse. I can't allow them to be together unsupervised which is breaking their hearts...neither understands. Maddy is especially confused. What happened understandably scared her and she wanted to know why Daisy was mad at her, and Daisy doesn't understand why she's locked away from her favorite human. Of course today Maddy is running around like nothing happened. I don't know if I'll ever be able to look at my best friend in the same way again. We've had her since she was a puppy...but this is Maddy. She's my reason for everything.

I wish that was the policy here I talked to a doc at Kaiser and he said we dont have a gerentology department. Its known that meds you take at forty need to be adjusted to when you are in your seventies.

Grandma has a new doc... Her blood pressure was too low and she sufferes from dizzy spells. New doc took the med she was taking and had her cut the pill in half and take it twice a day instead of once. We will see how well that works.

Shes been taking that medication since she was in her sixties. Now at 98 they are listening to her about her dizzy spells... Sheesh.

For what its worth we skipped spring and jumped into summer..... 87 degrees yesterday and 85 today over the whole county.

The Desert winds we call Santa Annas have started... Wind gusts up to hurricane strength are threatening to close Highway 8... Thats the one that goes from San Diego to To Yuma and on.

I have seen semi Trucks and or Toy haulers laying over the side of the freeway... and evidence of one that had been blown off into a canyon.

They line up on the freeway just about where Viejas Casino is... miles of Semis.

They let cars through and low profile vehicles most times but I have tried to get home at least once and had to turn around to come back to town for the night.

Happening across southern California too.
