The Old Folks Home

I was hoping it would warm up soon. We already have over 15" of snow, calling for 7-8 more. There calling for Snow, blowing snow, and dangerous wind chill values. Temp around zero, winds 15 to 25 mph from tonight through Sunday, with gusts up to 45 mph.
Wind chills, 20 to 35 degrees below zero, and as frigid as 40 degrees below zero, from late tonight through Monday morning.
Egads! Either build igloos or move south I'm thinking!
sounds exactly like us except for the snow. We have about 2' on the ground but no more coming for a while. We should hit between -20 to -30 tonight with windchills I'd rather not think about. Not something we weren't ready for. Our coldest weather, every year without fail, always lands on or near Valentine's Day. Every single cold record has been set within these few days, depending upon the exact moon phase.

It's the same here, can't even see out the windows it's a whiteout right now.

In the US, some food is radiated to get rid of bacteria (or anything else that's alive). For water, UV lights are used. That might work in the basement.

Around here, some snow is dumped in the sea, and some is gathered in special snow gathering spot. They get tons and tons of the stuff there, and sometimes some surprises too. My favorite was one year when they found a Nissan Micra among the melting snow in the Spring

UV lights-- is that the same as used in the sun cabinets for tanning??
you can use OTT lights for SAD and other reasons - every now and then JoAnn's fabrics has them 50% off - which is the only time their prices are approachable.. I have 4 ft.fluorescent T-12 bulbs in a fixture - use one Wide spectrum gro lux bulb and one cool white. Gives off the right balance to bloom plants - I would imagine that would be a cheap alternative. You probably could use a 2 ft. fixture but, the smaller size tubes cost more than the long ones.
haahaaa-- then I should set up the grow lights on the kitchen table where I can sit under them too!! lol

Quote: Geez-- no speed limits!! Could be dangerous for someone that does not know the area. Cake for one who drives those roads regularly.

Our mailbox was the last on the list to clear. lol By tomorrow it will be snowed in again by the big town plows!! Still need to clear more before tonight . . ..

I hatched my first turkey just now! So excited after waiting so long for some hens then eggs!

Quote: Yes I am worried about the eggs she is hiding in her nest. Her nest is a truck tire with hay filled in it. She laid the eggs in there and covered them up because before the last freeze I stole her clutch of 11 eggs and put them in the bator. She was not happy with me and hid these. I guess I will leave them, she is not yet sitting on them she is collecting her a clutch.

Thanks everyone for all the congrats! Diva I did have a bunch of Chantecler chicks for tutors but our son and dil took them home. But my first Buckeye chick did also hatch yesterday. and the next several days I will have more hatching.

It seems it may be ok to eat eggs, according to the govt. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/02/11/new-dietary-guidelines-may-ok-eating-eggs/ While they do emphasize balancing the "good, and bad" forms of cholesterol, and warn against overdoing saturated fats, they don't mention that hydrolyzed fats, such as margarine, are the worst. It's a start though. Good day to be an egg!
When I took a Foods class taught by the ag dept at college the profs didn't think the guideline of no eggs was real. As in they didn't have faith in the science behind saying no eggs. So I have always eaten eggs, several dozen a week when the girls are at peak. Funny how they still aren't willing to go after bread, pasta, and the junk food laced with fats like potato chips and twinkies. Dr Atkins points to several studies that when fats and high carb foods are part of the diet, bad things start to happen in the body.

You get an A+ !!!!!! My cholesterol was creeping over 190, when I changed to a lower carb diet, and the number dropped to under 175. The good ones were very high and the bad ones very low. I guess I shouldn't say I ate a lot of butter, fatty meats and such. It was the bread and pasta and such that I cut out.

You are all killlllling me. Grass, sand, beaches.

Meanwhile in SCG-Land:
* IMPACTS... HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW WILL LEAD TO BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AT TIMES... MAINLY LATE TONIGHT AND SUNDAY. TRAVEL WILL BE DANGEROUS WITH SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LOW VISIBILITY. WIND CHILL VALUES ARE EXPECTED TO BE WELL BELOW ZERO SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT.
Yup, think this is the coldest winter I can remember. In years past, it didn't snow if the temp was much under 30, now it is a regular occurrence. Snow goes crunch - chrunch. WHen temps are at 0, the "crunch" is stronger and slightly drier!!

DH is clearing snow off the barn roofs that have not cleared themselves yet. THank goodness we built the house, and it is beyond "code".

Another blizzard is coming. . ..
