ah ha that must be why you said something about the smell...........I usually change it more frequentlyFirst chicks we kept on paper towels for a couple of days, with hemp bedding underneath. After that, it's just been straight onto hemp. They peck at it for the first few days, but don't really eat it. Works great. 4 chicks in a guinea pig cage with 2 inches of hemp on the bottom took about 2-3 weeks before the bedding needed to be changed, mainly because we started them out with an open water bowl. With a nipple system it lasts a lot longer.
From one 150 liter bale of hemp you can fill the brooder about 10-15 times.
