I wonder.....

how am I going to replace my rooster with a hetero rooster???

can't decide...

I could raise up one of his sons... but then I will have to wait for the chick to be grown up, test mate, etc. before I KNOW, and then the rooster will have a 50% of being a hetero..

or... I could order another set of eggs, related (same breeder as before, I don't know anyone who has this breed), but at least it wouldn't be the son over his mothers..... but the chicks I raised would maybe be hetero or homo..... who knows, and I would be out more money..... and I would still have to wait for the chick to grow up and test mate to see what I ended up with

Anyone have input???

When I had free-ranging birds, I had some leghorns that just wouldn't stay in the pasture. Trimming wings helped a lot (kept them from roosting in the trees, too.)

I trimmed the primaries on one wing only - trimming both wings didn't help much, because they could get equal lift on both sides, and still get over the fence. Trimming just one meant they couldn't fly straight, so they were more likely not to even try it.

I trim one side, yes it makes them lopsided but helps keep them in. Trim both sides and they just flap harder. Nothing worked for one of my brownleghorns, and a EE bantam. They still got over a four foot fence. Lost to many to predators when they roosted in trees. So I put a fence on top of their run.

oO(sigh) DH is annoyed with me. We had to go to TSC for feed and they were having chick days. I'm sure he'll get over it, but at the moment he's muttering something about waiting till spring and shaking his head.
