The Old Folks Home

I trim one side, yes it makes them lopsided but helps keep them in. Trim both sides and they just flap harder. Nothing worked for one of my brownleghorns, and a EE bantam. They still got over a four foot fence. Lost to many to predators when they roosted in trees. So I put a fence on top of their run.
spent my fence $ on ammo. Got the predators trimmed back pretty well

We just came back from TSC (getting that high-protein chicken food to try to curb the feather eating). They were setting up for Chick Days. I have just one solo white marans chick that just hatched out and needs a friend and I thought "Aha! Maybe I can reserve a chick!" Found out that Chick Days starts Thursday, but they won't sell any less than 6 chicks at a pop. What??? Something about not having a bunch of neglected Easter chicks.

Hmmmm... Thinking cap goes on. On the trip back we looped to our local feedstore -- the Village Mercantile or "the Merc" -- and asked when they're getting their chicks in. "Thursday." "Any limits minimum or maximum?" "No." I've got a job assignment that day, but I will make sure that DH is there at opening to pick up a couple of Welsummers for me and my chick.

The things we do for our chickens....

I bought super expensive rose comb leghorn eggs!

So you're saying he wanted to get chicks and you told him to wait until Spring?
No, I'm saying he wanted to wait till spring and hatch our own again...which we will. But I have been wanting some EEs for a long time and though they were labeled as aracaunas, I could tell from their fat fluffy cheeks that they were not. I grabbed up the last four girls along with two BOs to make it the required six minimum. After treating one of the orps for pasty butt all six are snug and warm in my living room.
