The Old Folks Home

I guess Im just really, really frustrated with myself for not being able to accomplish the type of hatch rates that I need. Misplaced anger I guess.
I have more people wanting chicks than I can supply. Its just frustrating. Sorry for my rant.

I think we all have to learn what's best for our microclimate.

I feel. your pain about having more demand than supply.

It is ok!

Completely understandable. Have you looked at the hatch problem analyzer? It can help with fine tuning problems.

I can post the link to it if you want.

I have no issues with advice that any of you give, but there are a few people that keep posting misinformation about hatching as well as some other things.

I am so sorry that happens.

Examples to help others learn?

Sometimes its good to go back to basics.

Weighing eggs, taking notes and drawing aircells..

The simple things can sometimes be the difference

I am happy to go over anything with you. Here or in pm

Hang in there

Duck eggs should be incubated on their sides, 80% humidity is lethal, opening incubator at "lockdown" * will* cause shrink wrap. Then there are there's all the stuff that people keep saying about treating egg binding, sour crop, doses of various medications, etc.

I returned here to well over 400 posts! I skimmed, so if I missed something important, let me know. I am humbled and thankful for all the birthday wishes. I guess DS#2 decided to gift me with his cough/cold last Saturday and I have been sick ever since. DH picked it up on Monday, and DS#3 went to school today with just a slight headache. I suspect he will have it next.

Dude - You need to charge a finder's fee for those possums. As for your chicks, keep at it, and keep working on improving your incubator. I was/am amazed at the difference between an $800 Sportsman and the cheap old styro-bators. Two things changed, the hardware and the hatch rate. If I sold chicks for $1 each, I could easily have it pay for itself in one year (spring and fall hatch only.) The problem is this, first, I want to hatch for myself more than I want to sell chicks (although I do sell some chicks every spring) and secondly, chick sales will taper off once the market is saturated with what you have to offer (so you might not be able to do it in one season, but two to three seasons would be a given.)

I guess what I'm trying to say is, invest in a Sportsman, they are worth it and even if you decide to get out of chickens, they have a great resale value!

Thanks!

It is good that I don't say those things. The shrink wrap is so very true. It is very mis understood. It is amazing the reaction when I tell them that shrink wrap is usually from chicks that do not develop correctly and have sticky yolk that makes them stick; then can't zip--and that is either from shipping stress or incorrect average temperature during the first 18 days of incubation.

Thanks for keeping the treatment and dosage stuff straight for us!
