The Old Folks Home

silly chickens... sometimes they're a lot like some folks I know... no common sense!

Hope the eggs still hatch for you.

Last night after dark, I took eight eggs that are due to hatch tomorrow out to the broody Ameraucana hen that has been trying to hatch three golf balls for two weeks. I went out this afternoon and found her in the adjacent nest box on THOSE golf balls.

I felt of the eggs and they were slightly warm, so I moved the hen back onto the eggs and crossed my fingers. I went back out just before dark and she was still on them. I'm going to be upset if those eggs don't hatch because that silly hen didn't know which nest was hers when she returned from her break.

HAL eggs? :/

Diva you may be right. I wanted one of my hens to sit on some eggs last year that I was waiting on from Arielle and when they came I put them under her she had sat on golf balls for two weeks wanting some chicks so she accepted the turkey eggs when they came. She hatched them as was a great momma but we kept having to put her back on the right nest after her break not only that but the other hens kept climbing in with her and laying eggs for her to hatch. lol

Wisher, the eggs should be fine.

I lock my broodies in their nest and then let them out once a day to do their business. Once they're ready to come back I assist them to the correct area and then put their cage back over them.

It's just a simple thing that slides in and out and is held in with friction.

We've got one clutch of eggs, and again two broodies at the moment, so I don't need to worry about the cooling down. Instead, we're a bit low on eggs. Just the one layer working at the moment. I really need those eggs to hatch out some more girls, the four roos from the previous batch are only going to contribute to dinner once.

Our bunny pen is coming along nicely, we put up the frame this morning and did some more painting.

This thing became a bit bigger than planned again... it's going to have a total floor space of a bit over 80 square feet in two levels.

I KNOW, right? I was hoping for smarter than average chickens, but then again, I was also disappointed when I wished (there I go again) the same for my kids..........

No, these were some that I incubated in the house and gave them to her a couple of days before they were due to hatch. I will go out in a little bit and see if she has any chicks.

Wisher maybe you better ditch the golf balls - she seems to like them best.

LOL! I guess, they look like her kids! I left the golf balls in the other nest so the layers would see them and NOT try to climb in on top of the broody.

That's a sweet set-up you have, SCG! I have a nest box that opens to the side into a room where I can keep food and water. I generally don't use it until the chicks are mobile, but I may have to go ahead and do that with this one.
