The goose left last night and has not returned. Had I been able to catch it, I would have taken it to the wildlife rescue in San Jose and I would have lied about where I found it.

I'm pretty sure Murray McMurray and My Pet Chicken carry rose comb leghorns. I'd buy chicks so you don't have the concern about shipped eggs. They would be a brilliant breed for selling up there.

There are several breeders in MO with rose comb that may ship chicks to AK. One guy has Black, Buff, Dark Brown and White in rose comb. I like blacks but maybe white would be better in AK.

Estes Hatchery carries rose comb Anconas, another good choice.

Maybe something ate the goose. It was ripe for predation.

thanks @ChickenCanoe I had just very much wanted to start off with better quality birds than what you get from a hatchery.

I had RC Leghorn eggs shipped up last year from a breeder.. and a decent number to hatch.... but this year when I started hatching, it turned out that the rooster that I had kept from that hatch was heterozygous for rose comb, not homozygous.

I really wanted one that was homozygous for rose comb, so that I could put him over everything that I have, and always end up with RC chicks.

So... I ordered these eggs this year from a guy that said that his were homozygous for rose comb.....


anyway... I am pretty disappointed but might still end up with a good rooster.

we shall see.

I'd definitely e-mail those NPIP rose comb breeders in the MO breeder link to see if they can ship there.

I've kept single comb anconas and leghorns in some pretty cold weather so rose combs should do well.
We only had single comb white leghorns when I was young. No weather issues. The single comb is better for hot weather. It can range from -20 to 110+ here.
