The Old Folks Home

Kathy, I read on two sites that said it could cure blackhead. I am not going to use it. I saw someone on a poultry page telling everyone to use it in their chicken and turkey water every day! And to use it like most use ACV. I was shocked and I post a page with warnings on the page for some new members to read. But I thought of you when I read it is helpful with blackhead.

Puddin thought you might know something about the Copper Sulfate. She was trying to help me find out why people would use it.

I am sorry you are still having such a terrible time with your birds. I will send good healing prayers your way.

Not sure I'd want to try it as a cure, lol. To the best of my knowledge, the only "cure" is metronidazole or dimetridiazole. That will treat the protozoa, but one also needs to treat for cecal worms (fenbendazole or albendazole), and often they will have secondary E. coli infections that need yet another drug. Sigh...

This is what McMurray says:

"Blackhead disease can be a problem in turkeys, chukar, grouse, quail, partridge, pheasants, and peafowl but rarely in chickens. Chickens are often the carriers, thus the benefits of segregating birds by species as well as age. Caused by a protozoan, the symptoms include: increase thirst, decrease appetite, drowsiness, weakness, yellowish-brown, watery, or foamy droppings and the birds may become very thin.Pale yellow droppins in turkeys is almost always a sign of blackhead. Birds contact the disease by eating earthworms which contain the cecal worm or by ingesting droppings from infected birds. Dosage 1/4 tsp per gallon of water. Poultry should be over 3 weeks of age. This medication must be administered in glass or plastic waterer."

Almost forgot... I think it can be used a a preventative for canker.

This thread might get exciting and be fun to follow:

I read the first and last page and had a good few chuckles. I'm not sure exactly what required 29 pages of debate, but it was entertaining. Thank you for sharing.

Anyone ever have a welsummer just quit laying? Started this winter laid fine, few dozen eggs. Now she hasn't laid in over two months. She seems happy, isn't moulting or broody, only a year old this month. Can't be stressed, they all get along great, nobody gets picked on, even the wellie roo is nice and not a hen missing any feathers. ???
How long do I wait before she looses her head?

When I thread hop I see Kathy now and then. I thought she wanted a break from being OLD FOLKS for awhile.
