The Old Folks Home

Yep.... AC going now its still 89 outside. WE got rain today.. They say the dew point is 60 degrees. Pththth... like thats going to happen.

I am on a list of people who keep chickens in the desert and the consensus is a water puddle is the best way to chill them down some in the heat. Kiddie pool filled with aobut two inches of sand and filled with just enough water so it barely peeks through. Throw some scratsh on top and Viola Chicken Spa day. Once they find out they can chill down this way you almost dont need the sand. They will actually lay in it...

The problem with the water pool is needing to be here to set it up.

I have orbit mister lines on a timer. This is my third year of using it and it works great. I have it coming on at 3 and going off at 6. Tomorrow I may run it earlier and longer though.

I have lost one chicken in two years using the misters. Last summer a breeder in Red Bluff lost 15 Little Peddler marans in one day.

It's hotter here now than it was last month. It was constantly raining last month, which dropped the temps., but now we are only getting occasional light afternoon thundershowers, which only raise the humidity, and don't cool us off any. It's been in the mid - high 90's every day. My coop is shaded enough, and I have several nice fans in there to keep them cooled off.

I was going to ask you what you were doing for the chickens. Man, I do about the same thing as Perchie. I water down the dirt under the apple trees. They have made many a dust bath hole under them..oh, and one is a pear tree. Nice and shaded area. If I get those holes wet enough, they are in that area all day when it's hot out there. It has to rain for you guys soon! A lot!

Alaska is pretty big...

Where I am, and where I have been in Alaska... Nope. All wet.

Bog, forrest, grassland areas... But all wet.

Yep I know... but I found one.... The Kobuk valley ten inches of precipitation per year. its a small one only about twenty five square miles but sooooo pretty. and very studied for what it could be like on Mars.

Very beautiful.... For what its worth its only part of the total Arctic desert of 5.4 million MILES and its the second largest Desert in the WORLD... Second only to the one in Antartica which is 5.5 million miles. The Arctic desert covers parts of: Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.

Here is a site talking about the worlds Deserts.

My desert is part of the Sonoran Desert. And up till the 40's was on the fringes of a Cedar forest. A massive fire took it all with the exception of about a hundred trees that live on a ranch just a few miles from me. I chatted with the owner because she was putting up a straw bale house near the original house. She said she spoke to a Naturalist for the area and he was stunned because he did not know that some of the trees still survived.

so... Desert... its only defined by annual precipitation.

Accuweather says it will be 99 at 1pm today so I have the mist system going on at 1. The high peaks from 5 to 6 at 106, so the mist system will go off at 6. By 7pm it will be 95.

This is supposed to be the last triple digit day!

When I get home at 5pm, I will make sure they have plenty of water. I also have shad screens over the run for them.

I will remind you that you can gloat in January when it's negative 400 here with 6 foot snow drifts.

High 30's this morning. Last year we had our first dusting of snow on the 10th. Looks like we might have our first this year tonight. If it's clear, we'll have our first killing frost instead.

A prayer for a very peaceful Patriot's Day to all my chicken loving American friends.
