The Old Folks Home

@ronott1This is poultry lice...

First and second treatment how far apart?

What do I do about the egg clusters on feathers on my hens? A few hens have eggs on all of the feathers on their belly... LOTS of feathers.

Should I toss this highly toxic dust all over the coop???? Poop trays, nest boxes, and dust pile?

PLEASE don't tell me to get a second toxin to add to my first toxin. :th

Well the chickens could end up being seriously anemic/dead from lice overload and all the frantic scratching could kill them from severe blood loss. It's probably from NOT using chemicals that they are so loaded with lice.

You could don a face mask (for powders), a plastic apron and long elbow length plastic or latex gloves. Safety goggles are a nice touch as well. If you are like me ,you push the button on the wrong side and get doused in the face. Then a fast trip inside to rinse off face, eyeballs etc. You want to wear long sleeves, long pants, and a hat of some sort to keep it off hair and scalp.

Hey I use this get up to spray benign "neem oil," on my houseplants. Even though I've heard of people drinking the stuff for whatever reason, maybe intestinal powdery mildew or something. I do not recommend ingesting any deliberately.

The alternatives are burning & burying your coop, etc. Disposing of your flock, and after a sufficient grieving period, getting all new, fresh & lice free stock.. Whaddaya say?

Seriously.... This is like asking a crazy tree hugger to chop down a 300 year old red wood

I am having ISSUES

Deep breath... out with the bad in with the good... Second treatment is for those eggs after they hatch....

Its being been used for many many many years no ill effect.

its just sometimes you have to bring out the big guns.

IN africa where neem oil plants come from they use it to brew a tea for people.... for internal parasites.
Glad you reminded me of some research I was doing a while back....

Back when I had my first successful flock and was new to the desert I discovered leg mites. Vasoline took care of them.

But I started researching good organic pesticides....

Orange oil came to the top. can use it anywhere smells good

Neem oil came second but equally multitasking....

I like the thought of Orange oil. Natural by product of the orange juice industry... Waste not want not...

The exterminator industry here uses Orange oil for Termites...

I can only find it on line though. Amazon carries it.

Even so.. for a huge infestation I am totally on board with using what ever is most quickly effective. Ivermectin for mites and because i have it on hand for the horse. I also can use it for goats and dogs. Adams flea and tick spray with pyrithens...(sp?) can be used on birds cats and dogs.

DE I am hesitant to use but have no objections to using it as a deterrent. I would rather breathe pesticide dust than breath DE.

@drumstick diva

Myself and two eldest kids were totally clothed with hats, rubber gloves, and long sleeve coats (dang!! It was FREEZING). Kid holding birds for me had gloves and a breathing mask! Only just over an inch of skin was exposed. Other kid had flashlight.. I kept saying do NOT touch!!! Do NOT inhale!!!! (To the flashlight boy with no mask or gloves) :barnie

All clothes went into the wash... Kid #2 almost cried (at age 14) since he had to take a second bath in one day. :rolleyes: (he had bathed after the coop cleaning that afternoon). Eldest also took a bath (he didn't cry about it.. He is finally old enough, at 16, to think that being clean is good), then
I took a shower. :sick i too hate bathing.... But I didn't cry.

I AM totally having issues.

Dang! I should have made the kids wear the chemistry goggles. :hit

I have failed as a parent... They will hack up a lung and grow breasts... My eyes will rot out and why can't this horrid stuff grow hair?

They will both get cancer at age 24 and it will all be my fault. :hit

It'll be Okay Alaskan - there , there now

. Just think by the time all of you dry off after showers, it will almost be time to treat them again. Maybe I shouldn't have said that.
