The Old Folks Home

Once when we went camping we met with some aggressive squirrels. We left to go do something and thought we'd be smart and zipped the food in the tent. We came back to find the squirrels had eaten a hole in the tent to get at the food.

I got writer's cramp just reading this!

HATE squirrels. They demolished about 40% of my apricot crop this year. Took the cots, turned the top of them into confetti, took pit and dropped the other half of the fruit on the ground making for a real mess. AND the 100% guaranteed deterrents (Bob-X) just made my yard smell like a worcestershire factory run amuck. I think someone clued me in that copious amounts of blood meal worked best, but it had to be reapplied after rains or water exposure.

Kind of makes you wonder if there's a stash of 40+ gourds somewhere....and where?

Typically the squirrels will take whatever item and bury it someplace. From what I understand, they have a memory that they know each and every spot and can go back to them over the winter. Best of luck under 6 feet of snow though, right SCG? Anyway, at least you know the culprit(s). Next year you may have gourd vines rising from the strangest places.

We are suppose to get a freeze tonight and tomorrow night. I think my doe might have some kits either Mon. or Tues.
The lady said she was likely already pregnant when we got her. So I will turn on a light in their pen to help keep them warm.
I have joked for years about this. I go out in my rabbitry, get some does bred, go to the calendar, count down 4 weeks, count over 3 days, and say, "we are going to have a cold snap/heat wave (whichever is more likely at that time of year) right about then." Lots of people live in far colder climates than I do, and manage to breed rabbits outdoors all winter long, but I have learned that I can't do it. When I got to the point that I felt like I couldn't stand to see one more dead baby rabbit, I started to bring my due-to-kindle does in when the weather is cool, and let them deliver in my hall closet. It's a heck of a lot of disturbance for animals that have a reputation for not having much tolerance for it, but I figure, I'd probably lose the babies if I didn't, so what's the worst that can happen? Most of them have gone right ahead and done everything just as they are supposed to. Fingers crossed for a good, healthy litter!

Quote: I hope they will be ok. We have one end of this boxed in with 3/4" plywood and a wire bottom. But in one corner we put in a wooden crate and just cut a hole in it like a dog house and filled it half full with hay and between the box and the side of the brooder we have a drop light for warmth that we are going to plug in as soon as DH is done emptying the tanks on the RV.
I have had rabbits and have had litters in the winter with bad results. I will keep an eye on them and if it does not feel warm enough I will bring her in. She is not due till probably Tue. so I have a night to see. I do have a nice rabbit cage if I need to use it to bring her in.
Thanks for crossing your fingers. I would not have chose to have her bred this time of year. But I did not do it. lol

We put the 250 watt bulb in the brooder. I am not sure why but the doe keeps throwing the bedding out of the nest box. She is abt. If she does it again tomorrow morning I will bring her in the house.

No posts in 15 hours? Is everyone feeling okay?
I'm okay. It's just been a really busy week here and this coming one will be even busier bc Michael said he's cooking all of the Thanksgiving meal for my family. There's only 6 of us here. So tomorrow is shopping day. Then Tuesday & Wednesday we'll be cooking and baking for Thursday. By Friday I'll be totally exhausted I'm pretty sure.
