Hello, Peeps!

I went to the Dixie Classic Poultry Show in Knoxville, Tennessee this past weekend and had a great time! I went with Apdeb (she used to be here alot) and we had so much fun. I took a blue Ameraucana, which took Best of Variety out of two, and a black Ameraucana pullet that was second in variety out of about seven. I sold them both out of the hole for $65! I took four Campines for a man on a pre-sale, and then, it happened.

First I saw the cutest little 10 week old white crested, cuckoo, frizzled Polish that I couldn't resist. I paid $10 for it. Then, Apdeb found a white showgirl that she fell in love with, and went on so about her that I told her to buy it and I would keep it for her (she lives in an apartment right now.) Then I found a pair of Black Ameraucanas for sale and the lady threw in 5 silkie roosters! In a moment of weakness, I took them. I have always been a strictly large fowl person. I have never had, or wanted to have, froo froo birds.

Now, some questions...

1. Are all silkie roosters mean? They are trying to kill each other, which would be bad if the were any good at fighting.
2. How do you get Polish Poo out of an oriental rug?
3. Do they roost or do they squat, at night?
4. Can they do okay in cold weather like all my other birds, or do they have to stay above a certain temp? What temp?

Help! I'm in uncharted territory!

I've had some of those frou frou chickens for many years (my brother once said of them, "I don't believe you - even your chickens have fur!"). Can't help you on the Polish poo in the carpet - I have always insisted that no matter what the breed, any chicken that comes in the house must stay in a room with vinyl flooring.

I have had some well-behaved Silkie roos; even had two or three living together with a flock of hens. Gotta say, though, that one of the most comical things I have ever seen was when two Silkie roo's were mixing it up in the rabbitry. I had fly ribbons hanging in there, and when one of the roo's jumped up to attack the other, he bumped into the fly tape. He looked so foolish just hanging there from the tape . . . . (he was unharmed - just lost a few feathers and his dignity).

Silkies will roost at night if they can get to a roost. They can't get any lift with those silly wing feathers, so they need a ramp or ladder to get more than a few inches off the ground. If they have no other choice, they will hunker down on the floor.

As far as temperature, as I said, I've had them for many years, and I'll bet we get a lot cooler than you do. I have occasionally used lights to keep birds laying during the winter, but even my Seramas don't get a heated coop, and they seem to do fine.

I had one silky roo that could to a mighty flap with his two feathers on each wing and could getup and onto a two foot high saw horse... his brother Not so much. He still slept in their dog kennel.

Though If I had had a ramp he would have joined his brother. I felt sad for him he would stand and stare at his brother on the roost then go back to his kennel and settle down for the night.
