The Old Folks Home

Wisher...

On your carpet dilemma, scrape and pull up as much of it as you can and then use soda water and blotting. That should save you carpet from detergents. Good luck!

Why am I limited on the ability to give ovations? @support Have I done something wrong? @sumi Am I not a member in good standing? Is there some mystical, magical, maximum amount of good postings allowed per day that I'm exceeding in my reading?

Happy Pearl Harbor Day to you too.
The USS St. Louis, a light cruiser and the seventh US Navy ship in history named after my home town was the only US ship out of harbor after being docked and not in service on the morning of December 7, 1941 to join in the battle.
The St. Louis was moored to the pier in Southeast Lock at the time of the Japanese attack. At 7:56, Japanese planes were sighted by observers on board St. Louis.
Within minutes, the ship was at general quarters and her operable anti-aircraft guns were manned and firing on the attackers. By 8:06, preparations for getting underway had begun. At about 8:20, one of the cruiser's gun crews shot down its first Japanese torpedo plane. By 9:00, two more Japanese aircraft had joined the first. At 9:31, St. Louis moved away from the pier and headed for South Channel and the open sea. 15 minutes later, her 6 inch guns, whose power leads had been disconnected, were in full operating order.
As the cruiser moved into the channel entrance, she became the target of a midget submarine. The Japanese torpedoes exploded striking a shoal less than 200 yards from the ship. Destroyers then pounded the bottom with depth charges and St. Louis continued out to sea where she joined Detroit and Phoenix, both of which also left Pearl Harbor during the attack, and a few destroyers searching for the Japanese fleet. After failing to locate the Japanese strike force, the hunters returned to Pearl Harbor on 10 December. St. Louis turned to escorting transports carrying casualties to San Francisco and troops to Hawaii.
Thank you. Ovation attempted. denied

Really good link/commercial. Thanks for sharing! Ovation attempted. denied
One of the few times I actually wept in public was the trip out to the USS Arizona. It was on December 8th a decade ago and the wreathes were still up.
God bless our troops, past, present and future.

Thank you Peeps. Not many vets from that era left, and they're passing away at an ever increasing rate. Ovation attempted. denied

There is a strange formula for ovations. The more you get, the more can give, and when they run out, you don't get them back till the next day (or thereabouts). There's a thread that explains it, but its still not very understandable. :)

I've been an active member (not as active as SOME

) since I joined 3/17/14, so what 18+ months? In that time, I've managed to accrue 1 infraction (someone ticked me off - hot buttons, gotta love it) and 2 warnings (One ticked me off too, but I controlled myself the other, I talked about moderation) and I have over 1030 posts... I'm not on here just randomly passing out ovations... and I really don't understand why they'd be restricted on someone who's been here so long and been a good member...

Maybe because I only have 189 ovations myself? I'm not trying to give myself an ovation but others who deserve them...

I guess if I paid for a golden feather membership I'd be buying a little more freedom to acknowledge when someone posts something worthwhile? Or maybe not... I sometimes wonder...

Congratulations Latestarter on your discovery of the mysterious ovations. I read the page on them, and it's as clear as mud. I admit I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but dang!

I have heard about members running out of ovations to give out but have not had that problem yet. I do not think it has anything to do with infractions but may have to do with membership type.

There seems to be a relationship between the number of ovations you have and the number and power of the ovations given. How many do you get when I give you one? Is it 5 or so?

I forgot to add that I also picked up a pair of nice RIReds that I will have a go at selectively breeding. They are descendents of Bob Blosl's flock of Mohawk line single comb large fowl birds. I couldn't help myself.
Wow, what a treasure you have!

Your experience working with your Campines will help you "find" what Bob bred into those RIRs even if they weren't the best of Matt's flock. Be sure to keep us posted on your progress with them.

no change... Did you give me one? Ron? CC? Anyone? I'm really not hunting them... I say what I want/feel... If someone likes it fine, if not, that's fine too. I just wanted/like to give out a few to deserving posters. I guess maybe I give out too many... maybe I should be more selective/critical...
